MOBILE, Ala. – The Belhaven Women's Tennis team picked up a 5-4 victory over Martin Methodist Friday afternoon and fell to Brenau University 8-1 to open up Southern States Athletic Conference play.
Belhaven (6-2, 1-1 SSAC) advanced out of double action with a 2-1 lead, via an
AnneMarie Kimball and
Stephanie Smith 8-4 defeat of Gema Bolado Yusta and Brenda Rique and a win by default.
In singles action, Belhaven split with Martin Methodist (0-2, 0-1 SSAC) 3-3.
Rachel Jefcoat defeated Laura Ariza 6-3, 6-0 and
Ashley McLendon defeated Ashlee Elkins 6-4, 6-0.
Brittany Keeling picked up Belhaven's final point in singles action by default.
In the match against No. 7 Brenau (3-2, 3-0 SSAC), Belhaven dropped all three double matches by scores of 8-2, 8-0 and 8-0.
In singles action,
Mary Lichlyter avenged a single loss in the first game with a (2-6), 6-2, 1-0 victory over Nathalia Bolivar. It was the only point for the Green and Gold in the match.
The Blazers will return to action on Saturday with a pair of games to complete the SSAC Roundup in Mobile.
