Box Score JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven women's soccer team picked up their second victory of the season on Saturday afternoon, thanks to a late goal that sunk Delta State University 2-1. The Blazers now stand at 2-1 on the young season, while the Lady Statesmen were hit with a loss in their season opener.
"The girls came out ready to play today after a tough loss earlier this week. They knew the things they needed to fix and showed us that they are willing to compete," Assistant Coach
Jessica Monarch said. "They've demonstrated what kind of season we want to go after."
After a scoreless first half, Belhaven Team Captain
Ashley Harber found the back of the net for the second time this year fifteen minutes into the second half. Her goal was assisted by
Laura Quintero, but the lead would stand for just 14 minutes.
Erin Tucker fired a shot from 30 yards out on the right wing, sneaking one past Belhaven goalie
Nicole Walsh. The senior keeper would ensure that was her lone mistake of the contest, as she ended being a key factor in the victory. Belhaven was outshot 18-12, but each of Walsh' six saves proved to be instrumental.
"For her to be the rock she was in the net today gave the rest of the team the heart to keep competing," Monarch said. "She was a huge part of a big team win."
The contest appeared to be heading to overtime, but junior centerback
Dani Craft had other plans. With less than three minutes remaining in the game, Craft sailed one past Delta State keeper Katie Swaine, sealing up the win for Belhaven.
"My teammates set me up perfectly, so it's unfair for me take the glory," Craft said. "Coach gave me the opportunity, and I knew we needed a goal to put the game away. I wanted the ball on my foot in that situation."
The Blazers will return to action on Tuesday, when they will host crosstown rival Millsaps College at the Belhaven Bowl. The contest is set to begin at 7:00 pm.
