Box Score JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven women's soccer team (1-1-0) suffered their first loss of the season Thursday night in front of a packed Bowl crowd. The Choctaws (1-0) won the game 6-0 after scoring their first goal just 38 seconds into their young season and carrying momentum over for the rest of the night.
"We made mistakes early, and that is costly against a team like Mississippi College," Head Coach
Josue Sabillon said. "We have some things to solidify to make sure we don't make the same mistakes, but we now need to refocus and bounce back."
Melanie Benner was credited with the initial goal after an impressive assist from Sayit Mejia Bello, but 24 minutes later, Bello found the back of the net herself. Each would go on to add a goal before Hope Smith and Stephanie Stapleton put the finishing touches on the victory in the game's final twelve minutes.
The Choctaws outshot the Blazers 29-3, including an 18-1 mark on goal. Choctaw goalkeeper Robin Cooper saved the only shot that came her way, but Mississippi College's consistent offensive attack proved too much for Belhaven defensively.
Less than a week after shutting out Louisiana College in the season opener, senior goalie
Nicole Walsh was hit with her first loss of the year in the net. Walsh picked up twelve saves, severely limiting the Choctaw offense enough to raise some eyebrows on her team's bench.
"In my opinion, Nikki was the player of the game tonight," Sabillon said. "She was key in keeping the goal count down and came with some huge saves. We took some growing pains on our back line tonight, but after watching film, we will focus our attention on our next opponent."
The Blazers will look to rebound on Saturday, when they host in-state rival Delta State University, who Belhaven defeated 3-2 a season ago. The match is set to begin at 1:00 pm in the Bowl.
