Box Score JACKSON, Miss. – Belhaven's men's soccer team earned their third consecutive victory Wednesday evening, defeating the Millsaps Majors 2-0. The match marked the first time on the season that Millsaps was shut out, but the Blazers have now blanked three different opponents.
"It took us some time to get going, but as the game developed, we began to get more balanced with our play," Head Coach
Carl Griffiths said. "I'd like to earn a little more offensively, but we got the job done tonight."
After more than 54 minutes of scoreless soccer, junior
Cillian Thompson took advantage of a miscue in the Millsaps defense to find the net for the first time this year. Almost exactly ten minutes later, teammate
Joao Belmonte stole the ball from a defender and added Belhaven's second and final goal of the night.
On both occurrences, the Blazers caught Major goalkeep Jonathan Hubbe out of the net, but Belhaven's offensive attack was continuous for the bulk of the night. The Blazers outshot their hosts 16-12, including a 10-3 mark on goal.
Hubbe finished his night with an impressive eight saves, while Belhaven counterpart
Marcelo Mercuri needed just three to keep his third straight opponent off the scoreboard. Belhaven took an 8 to 5 edge in corner kicks, helping them sink the Majors in their first meeting since 2010.
The Blazers now turn their attention to Missouri Baptist, who will host the Blazers on Friday. The match is set to begin at 12:00 pm.
"Missouri Baptist is a tough opponent that will require us to be much more disciplined," Griffith said. "If we can clean that up, I think we can score some goals and hopefully come away with a victory."
