Box Score MONTGOMERY, Ala. - After 106 minutes of scoreless play, the Belhaven men's soccer team defeated Wayland Baptist University (Texas) 1-0 on Monday evening. The first win of the year came in the Auburn University-Montgomery Tournament a day after the Blazers suffered their first loss to Davenport University (Mich.), making the Blazers 1-1 on the season.
"We played strong opponents and responded well after losing our first match," Head Coach
Carl Griffiths said. "Our team showed great resolve and desire throughout the game, and many players had to step up. Our depth played a crucial role in our win."
Senior
Victor Lawrence struck in the second overtime period, sneaking the contest's lone goal into the net after an assist from
Nicolas Cornejo. The Blazers held the Pioneers (0-2) in check, but Wayland goalie John-Ramses Thomas ultimately surrendered the game winner after saving six previous shots. All of Thomas' saves came in the second half, while his team was unable to get a shot on goal.
Belhaven was outshot 14-11, but
Marcelo Mercuri gave Belhaven a shutout win over an opponent who received votes in the Preseason Coaches' Poll last week. Of the Blazers' 16 wins a season ago, eight of them came by keeping the other team from finding the back of the net. Wayland also took the edge in corner kicks 7-4 in a game that featured 30 total fouls, but the Blazers picked up the virst victory of Head Coach Carl Girffiths' Belhaven career.
"This weekend was a great test for us," Griffiths said. "I'mv very proud of all of our boys."
The Blazers return to action on Saturday, when they meet with Hendrix College in a neutral site game in Memphis, Tenn. at 12:00 p.m.
