Box Score MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Belhaven University Blazers soccer team fell to No. 21 Davenport University 2-0 in the season opener Saturday on the opening day of the University of Auburn - Montgomery Invitational.
The Blazers were unable to get on the score sheet despite putting 12 shots toward the Davenport goal in the game.
Belhaven fell behind in the 33rd minute when Davenport took the momentum from a save on shot by
Pedro DeSouza. On the other end, Davenport was able to strike with its sixth shot of the game. The Panthers tested Blazers keeper
Marcelo Mercuri twice prior to that point, but Davenport's third shot on frame proved to be the eventual winner.
Belhaven responded quickly with a pair of shots from DeSouza and then
Victor France, but both shots were blocked before they could test Alex Ghattas of Davenport.
Early in the second half,
Victor Lawrence had a shot blocked and
Craig McCabe was able to put the rebound on target, but Ghattas was able to keep it out of the net.
DeSouza and McCabe then put three shots for the Blazers toward the Davenport goal around the 70th minute, but missed high and wide.
Mercuri made three more stops in the second half, but Davenport was able to squeak one by in the 82nd minute on a one-timer coming in near post from a cross that provided some late insurance.
Belhaven will look to rebound on Monday with its contest against Wayland Baptist University. The game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
