MONTGOMERY, Ala. The Belhaven women's tennis team concluded their 2013-14 season with a loss to No. 13 Coastal Georgia in the SSAC Quarterfinals on Friday afternoon. The Blazers fought hard, but were outmatched in both singles and doubles courts, losing 8-1. Belhaven came into the SSAC Quarterfinals as the #6 seed, while the Mariners were the #3 seed in the tournament.
"It was a tough match against one of the top teams in the country," said Head Coach
Levi Patton. "We played really well as a whole and we were very close on court two in doubles play. Mary (Lichlyter) had a great match to win the number five singles court while Katie (Campbell) fell just short in a tiebreaker on court two. Overall, I'm proud of the team and how the competed today and this season."
In women's singles, the Mariners were able to set the tone early by winning the first four courts. Coastal Georgia used that momentum en route to winning all but one court. The lone Blazers' victory came on the No. 5 court with freshman,
Mary Lichlyter's 6-4, 7-5 win over Coastal Georgia's Kristina Polakovic.
In women's doubles, the Mariners won all three courts over the Blazers.
The Blazers finished their season winning six of their last eight matches. They also posted an overall 7-3 record when hosting matches at the Belhaven Tennis Complex.
Belhaven wrapped up the season with an overall 12-7 record, and a 5-3 record in SSAC play.
