JACKSON, Miss. – Belhaven University and the Department of Athletics are pleased to announce that
Carl Griffiths has been hired as the new Head Coach of the Men's Soccer program. Griffiths brings a wealth of experience as a coach and player at the NCAA Division III level. Griffiths comes to Belhaven after spending the last two seasons at Waynesburg University (PA), where he served as the Head Coach for both the men's and women's soccer programs.
"I am very excited Coach Griffiths has joined our staff team to give leadership to our Men's Soccer program," said Belhaven Vice President for Athletics
Scott Little. "His strong faith and elite soccer background will serve our student-athletes well in the years ahead. We were grateful to have a strong field of candidates and finalists, and that's what we have come to expect given the rich tradition of Belhaven University Men's Soccer."
Griffiths has led the Waynesburg men to a combined 18-12-4 record over the past two seasons. After an 8-8-1 campaign in 2012, Griffths guided the club to a 10-4-3 mark this past season. On the strength of that success, Griffths was selected as the 2013 President's Athletic Conference Men's Coach of the Year and had three players named to the PAC All-Conference Team. In addition, he coached one NSCAA All Region Player and his team earned an NSCAA Academic Award. Griffiths has earned NSCAA National, Advanced National and Premier Diplomas and in 2011 was chosen by the US Soccer Federation and US State Department for work internationally with Ugandan coaches.
Griffiths began his coaching career at Wheaton College as a first assistant coach from 2009-11. Griffths was also an outstanding player at Wheaton, helping guide the team to the NCAA Division III National Championship game in 2006 against Messiah College. During his four year career, Wheaton played in the NCAA Tournament each season.
As a player, Griffiths appeared in 67 games, including 24 starts as a senior co-captain. During his senior year, Griffiths was named to the NCAA Final Four All-Tournament Team and was a CCIW All-Conference selection.
