Men’s and Women’s Tennis Perfect on Day One of Mobile Round-Up

MOBILE, Ala. – The Belhaven men's and women's tennis teams both defeated Martin Methodist College and Emmanuel College on Friday in day one of the Mobile Round Up at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center in Mobile, Ala. The men improve to 5-1 on the season while the women bumped their record to 5-2.

"These were a solid wins for us overall," said head coach Levi Patton. "We had to stay disciplined and focused and our players accomplished that today."

In the first match of the day, the Belhaven men turned in a dominating performance against Martin Methodist, winning 8-1. Taking all three doubles courts 8-6, 8-5 and 8-4 respectively, Jefferson Nino took the first single's win for the group on the No. 3 court with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Cristian Arias. He was followed by No. 4 Daniel Prado over Daniel Emirzian 6-2, 6-0; No. 1 Andre Borghi over Ramiro Vargas 6-1, 6-3; No. 2 Nikita Lisov over Cristian Arias 2-6, 6-0 (10-4); and No. 6 Enrico Patriarca over Gabriel Ajalla 6-2, 7-6 (7-5). The Redhawks solo win came at the No. 5 court with a win by Salomon Persson against David Mejia 4-6, 3-6.

The women got past Martin Methodist with a final score of 6-3. Following a default at No. 3 singles, the Blazers dropped both doubles courts. The No. 1 team of Stephanie Smith and Elizabeth Chrestman fell 2-8 to Maria Charrys and Callie Thomas while Rachel Jeffcoat and Mary Lichlyter fell on the No. 2 court 5-8 to Victoria Ryjak and Laura Ariza.

Taking five of the six singles courts, the Blazers were able to take advantage of the shorthanded Redhawks. Singles finishers were as follows: No. 6 Brittany Keeling won by default; No. 2 Katie Campbell defeated Callie Thomas 6-2, 6-0; No. 1 Stephanie Smith lost to Redhawks' Maria Charrys 2-6, 0-6; No. 4 Rachel Jeffcoat over Laura Ariza 6-1, 6-3 and No. 5 Elizabeth Chrestman over Ashlee Elkins 6-4, 6-4.

Against Emmanuel, the Belhaven men swept through five sets for the victory. In the doubles portion of the match, the Blazers blanked the Lions 3-0. Jefferson Nino and Nikita Lisov defeated Pasha Zinchenko and Joaquin Marshall 8-2. Andre Borghi and Enhico Patriarca topped Cody Norris and David Forehand 8-1. The Blazers David Mejia and Daniel Prado won by default. In singles, Belhaven needed only two set wins to claim the match. David Mejia defeated Hayden Black 6-0, 6-0 in the only complete set. The fifth point came on a default.

In women's doubles against Emmanuel, the Blazers took two out of the three sets. The Stephanie Smtih and Elizabeth Chrestman suffered Belhaven's only loss 5-8 to Christianne Tetley and Oliva Gish. Rachel Jeffcoat and Mary Lichlyter defeated Madalena Fausto 8-1 while Ellen Scott and Brittany Keeling won by default.

In singles competition against Emmanuel, the Belhaven women swept through the competition. Belhaven's No.4 Rachel Jeffocoat defeated Jacklyn Kierk 6-0, 6-1; Stephanie Smith got past Christanne Tetley 6-3, 6-1; Katie Campbell knocked off Olivia Elkins 6-2, 6-2 and Mary Lichlyter won over Madalena Fausto by default. Elizabeth Chrestman and Brittany Keeling also picked up default victories.

Both teams will take on the College of Coastal Georgia in SSAC play on Saturday morning. The matches are set to begin at 9:00 AM.
