Belhaven falls to Pikeville 41-31

JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven Blazers football team fell to the University of Pikeville on Saturday 41-25 at H.T. Newell Field.
 
Belhaven (2-7) was able to cut the deficit to six in the third quarter, but the Blazers gave up 10 points in the fourth quarter as Pikeville (4-6) pulled away.
 
Belhaven had 621 yards of total offense on 103 plays on Saturday, but an interception and two fumbles lost proved costly.
 
The Blazers took the lead in the opening minutes with a 20-yard pass from Brian Ensminger to Greg Livingston to open up the scoring.
 
After 10 points by Pikeville to take a 10-6 lead, Belhaven answered with a 11-yard run by Kadero Edley to put Belhaven up 13-10.
 
Pikeville then rallied off three straight touchdown runs in the remainder of the first half to take a 31-13 lead into the break.
 
Darien Thomas then caught two touchdown passes of five and 25 yards for 12 points in the third quarter. Belhaven failed on both two-point conversion attempts.
 
Thomas finished with six catches for 61 yards.
 
Ensminger was 30-of-44 for 374 yards and four touchdowns. He also had one interception.
 
Despite cutting the deficit to 31-25, Belhaven could not rally anymore as Pikeville added another touchdown and a field goal to seal the game.
 
The Blazers were able to grab a late touchdown, a 45-yard catch by Livingston. The senior finished the game with 13 catches for 195 yards.
 
Alvin Vaughn and Steven Joiner each led the Blazers with seven total tackles in the game.
 
Belhaven finished with 242 yards rushing on 58 attempts, averaging 4.2 yards per carry.
 
The Blazers will return to action next Saturday in the season finale against Bethel. The game is set for a 1:30 p.m. start at H.T. Newell Field.
