JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven University Blazers football program put a close to its first season under head coach
Hal Mumme on Saturday, falling 39-34 to Bethel University at H.T. Newell Field.
The Blazers (2-9, 0-5 MSC-West), who led for most of the game, regained a one-point lead with just over three minutes left, but were unable to hold on, allowing the Wildcats (5-6, 2-3 MSC-West) to come from behind to score with 59 seconds remaining for the winner.
Brian Ensminger connected with
Darien Thomas just 73 seconds into the game for a 37-yard touchdown pass.
Bethel responded immediately with a kickoff return for a touchdown but the Blazers held a 7-6 lead after the extra point was missed.
The Green and Gold added to their advantage with a 13-yard pass to
Jacob McNeil from Ensminger and then a 10-yard run by
Kadero Edley to hold a 20-9 lead after one quarter.
Lamiquell Roberts caught a 6-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter as both teams scored seven in the second 15 minutes, giving Belhaven a 27-16 lead headed to the break.
Late in the third quarter, Bethel added two touchdowns to take the lead and then added a field goal in the fourth to go up 33-27.
With 3:06 left, Thomas caught his second touchdown pass from Ensminger to go up 34-33 after the extra point.
Ensminger finished with 410 yards passing, going 38-of-53 through the air, with four touchdowns.
Aaron Spikes led the way for the Blazers on the ground with 107 yards on six carries.
Greg Livingston led the Blazers with 12 receptions and 136 yards, but Thomas also finished with 10 catches and 115 yards to go along with his two scores.
Syndrick Malone finished with 12 tackles, including nine solo tackles. He also finished with a forced fumble and a break up.
Steven Joiner finished with a team high 1.5 tackles for a loss.
