Box Score MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Belhaven men's soccer team picked up an important Southern States Athletic Conference victory Thursday night, defeating Faulkner University by a final of 2-1. The Blazers have now won three of their last matches, outscoring opponents 11-4 during the stretch.
"We had to hold out several players due to past injuries, forcing us to rely heavily on other players," Head Coach
Carl Griffiths said. "Some guys had to play more minutes than normal, but our fitness held up well and we got the desired result. I'm pleased with our performance overall."
Cillian Thompson got the Blazers (10-5-0, 3-4-0 SSAC) on the scoreboard first, just six minutes into the game, after an assist from
Jose Presti.
Thompson led all Blazers in shot attempts, with nine on the night, including four on target.
John Ledbetter was second on the team with four shots and two on goal.
The Blazers carried a 1-0 lead into halftime and, like the first half, saw its second goal come at the six minute mark of the half. This time Belhaven was gifted a goal on a bouncing ball that was played by a Faulkner defender into his own net for an own goal.
Jeff Ransom found Alex Stutts in the 89th minute to cut the deficit in half for the Eagles (5-7-2, 1-5-1 SSAC), but the home team failed to get another shot on goal. With the victory, Belhaven remained unbeaten in the all-time series, which now stands at 5-0-0
.
Daniel Prado recorded three saves in the net for the Blazers, while Pritchard Ndaira and Diego Da Silva combined to save nine Belhaven shots. The Blazers out shot the hosts 23-19, including a 10-4 mark on frame, while also taking a slight 9-8 edge in set pieces.
The Blazers will take the field for the final time in the regular season on Saturday, when they will square off with Middle Georgia State College. The match is set to begin in 1:00 pm from Cochran, Georgia.
