Blazers set to host homecoming game vs Reinhardt

JACKSON, Miss. - Belhaven University football welcomes Reinhardt University to H.T. Newell Field for the Blazers Homecoming Game on Saturday, October 18. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.

The Blazers (2-4, 0-2 MSC West) and Eagles (3-3, 1-1 MSC West) will face each other for just the second time in the history of the two schools. Reinhardt won the first-ever meeting last season 49-17 in Waleska, Ga.

Belhaven will be looking to snap a four-game skid on Saturday. The Blazers have not lost five straight games in the same season since the final five games of the 2008 season. The Blazers dropped the first two games of the 2009 season, carrying the total streak to seven straight.

The Blazers enter this week's game leading the NAIA in passing. Belhaven has thrown for 2342 yards, averaging 390.3 yards per game through the air.

Greg Livingston leads the NAIA in receptions (65) and receptions (10.8) per game and is also fourth in receiving yards (761).

Against the state of Georgia
Belhaven is 3-5 all time against teams from the state of Georgia and will have just Reinhardt this season.

The Peach State has not been very friendly to the Blazers in recent years, as Belhaven has dropped its last five games against teams from the state of Georgia.

Belhaven's last win against a team from Georgia came against Shorter University on October 20, 2007, a 25-21 victory for the Blazers at Newell Field.

Edley breaks through for three
Kadero Edley had rushing touchdowns of 6, 3, and 1 yard on Saturday. The three scores was the first time a Blazer had rushed into the end zone multiple times in a game this season.

Edley's scores also marked the first time a Blazer had three rushing touchdown's in a game since last season's win against Bethel.

This season, Edley has four touchdowns in just 24 attempts. His other score came against Mississippi College in game two.

For his career, Edley has 11 total rushing touchdowns with five of them coming against Bluefield. He had a 2-TD performance in 2012, a part of Belhaven's 66-10 win at H.T. Newell Field.

Forrest racking up yards and experience
Freshman quarterback Mickey Forrest was pushed into the starting roll after Conner Preston's injury at the end of the first half in game four at Cumberland. In a little over 10 quarters of action, Forrest has quickly adapted to the starting role and surpassed the 1000-yard passing mark in Saturday's game against Bluefield.

Forrest has completed 84 of 141 passing attempts for 1042 yards, including four touchdowns. In his two starts during the stretch, Forrest has thrown for an average of 415.5 yards per game.

Edley eclipses 1000-yard rushing mark
With his 32 yards rushing last Saturday, Kadero Edley eclipsed 1,000 yards rushing for his career in Green and Gold. Edley stands at 1030 yards rushing in 188 rushing attempts over his 18-game career.

The senior has averaged 5.5 yards per carry during his career and has scored 11 touchdowns for the Blazers. Edley also has 131 receiving yards with 24 catches coming out of the Belhaven backfield.

Goree on verge of multiple season marks
With the Blazers just crossing the midpoint of the 2014 season, senior linebacker Gregory Goree is closing in on the top five in all-time performances for a Blazer in multiple defensive categories. Through six games, Goree has accounted for 12.0 tackles for a loss and 5.0 sacks.

Both stats are just two shy of the top five on the Blazers all-time season highs and Goree's 12.0 tackles for a loss has the Shannon, Miss. native on pace to break current assistant coach Ricky Wadlington's record of 21.0 tackles for a loss in a single season set back in 2011. Goree is currently on pace for 22.0.

In his two years with the Blazers, Goree has 73.5 career tackles, with 20.0 tackles coming for a loss. He also has accounted for five sacks, two interceptions, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and six passes deflected. He is 5.5 tackles for a loss away from the top five on the all-time list in under two seasons with the Green and Gold.

First 100-yard game
Lamiquell Roberts had his first 100-yard receiving game of his Belhaven career last Saturday, reeling in seven catches for 139 yards and a touchdown. Roberts career high heading into the game was 96 yards earlier this season against Cumberland.

Roberts has emerged as a legitimate receiving threat over the last four games, with at least five catches and 60 yards in each of those games.

For his career, the Mobile, Ala. native has reeled in 63 passes for an even 900 yards. Roberts has averaged 14.3 yards per catch and 60 yards per game in two seasons. He has also accounted for eight touchdown catches.

Vaughn making most of opportunity
Alvin Vaughn has been a tackling machine for the Blazers in 2014 as the sophomore has really grabbed onto a starting role for the Belhaven defense. Through six games this season, Vaughn has recorded 65 tackles, which leads the Green and Gold Defense by 24 over the next closest Blazer.

What is more impressive is that the McKinley High School product out of Baton Rouge, La. has nearly doubled his totals from his freshman campaign and Belhaven has only just reached the halfway point of the 2014 season. Last season, Vaughn recorded 33 (16 ua, 17 a) total tackles and this season he has added 65 (27 ua, 38 a), bring him just two tackles shy of the 100 tackle mark.

Under the 3-3-5 defensive scheme of defensive coordinator Josh Creech, Vaughn has also been able to get into the backfield in 2014, recording 7.0 tackles for a loss through six games, totaling 20 yards. Vaughn has also recorded a forced fumble this season to go along with a pass defended.

4 X 100
Greg Livingston has reached the 100-yard receiving mark in each of the last four games for the Blazers. The senior has also had at least 11 receptions in each of those games.

After games of 94 and 95 receiving yards, Livingston has piled up numbers of 136, 108, 161 and 167 in each of the last four games, respectively. Livingston has five touchdown receptions on the season, including three against Texas College, part of a four touchdown day overall.

Kicking up the Charts
With his 23-yard field goal at Cumberland, Alonso Acosta has moved into a tie for fourth all time on the Belhaven career field goal list.

Acosta is currently in a three-way tie for fourth with 13 career field goals. The sophomore is three away from third place and just nine behind the all time lead of 22.

Living at the top
Wide receiver Greg Livingston has been a number one target of Conner Preston and now Mickey Forrest. The senior currently leads the nation in receptions (65) and receptions per game (10.8).

Livingston also ranks high in receiving yards and receiving yards per game. The senior has 761 yards through six games, averaging 126.8 yards receiving per contest. The numbers rank Livingston fourth and fifth, respectively, in the NAIA.

The Houston, Texas native also ranks high in all-purpose yards, punt return yardage and scoring. Livingston is currently 12 with 944 All-Purpose yards, 15th in All-Purpose yards per game (157.3), 15th in Punt Return Yardage (105). He also sits 42nd in total scoring with 36 points through six games, averaging a score per game.

The top passing attack
The Belhaven Blazers passing game has been one of the most productive in the country this season. The Blazers have thrown for 2342 yards through six games, averaging 390.3 yards per game through the air.

Both statistics rank the Blazers first in the NAIA as the next closest team (Southern Oregon) has nearly 200 passing yards less at 2144 and is averaging 33 yards less per game at 357.3.

Overall, the Blazers have completed 216 passes, 40 more than any other team in NAIA and have thrown the ball a total of 346 times, 38 more than the next closest team.

Against Ranked Opponents
The Belhaven Blazers road schedule couldn't be much tougher in 2014, as all four MSC opponents were ranked at the time or are currently ranked in the NAIA Top 25.

Belhaven is currently 0-2 this season against ranked opponents. The Blazers were narrowly defeated by No. 4 Cumberlands in Williamsburg, Ky. and fell to No. 21 Cumberland 41-9 in Lebanon, Tenn. Belhaven also fell to a Campbellsville side that was receiving votes at the time and is currently ranked in the top 25.

The Blazers still have trips to No. 7 Faulkner and No. 17 Lindsey Wilson on the schedule.

Last Clean Sheet
Belhaven's last shutout came in 2012 when the Blazers blanked the Eagles of Faulkner University in a Mid-South Conference West Division battle in Montgomery, Ala. The Blazers defeated Faulkner 35-0 with the victory on October, 27, 2012.

Prior to that, Belhaven's last and only other shutout came on November 4, 2000 in another 35-0 victory in a conference game over Union (Ky.).
Last time Blazers were shutout

It has been nearly three seasons since the Green and Gold were last shutout in a game. The Blazers were defeated 58-0 at the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) on October 29, 2011.

Sack attack
The Blazers defense has done a good job of limiting opponents passing games through the first five games. Belhaven has allowed just 132.7 yards passing per game, seventh best in the NAIA and best among schools in the Mid-South Conference. A large part of that success has been the Green and Gold's success in getting to the quarterback. Belhaven is seventh in the NAIA and second in the MSC in sacks per game, averaging 3.2 per contest.

This past week, the Blazers got to the quarterback for five sacks, amounting to 22 yards lost. In the 10 drop backs for Bluefield, the Rams accounted for -17 yards on designed pass plays after the Blazers secondary held BC to just five yards passing in the game. In total, the Blazers have 19 sacks for 109 yards through six games. Gregory Goree leads the Blazers with 3.5 sacks for 30 yards.

A European sight-seeing vacation?
The Blazers schedule was front heavy with a lot of long trips to start the season, with three of the first four games on the road. The Blazers logged nearly 40 hours of travel on the bus with 2,655 miles through the first three road trips.

After this weekend's game, Belhaven will be back on the highway to wrap up the road schedule, logging another 1,592 miles. For the year, Belhaven will travel a total of 4,247 miles for its five road games in 2014.

The distance traveled would be the equivalent of a European sight-seeing vacation, as Belhaven Football will travel the distance it would take one to travel across Europe going from Lisbon, Portugal to Rome, Italy with stops in the order of Madrid and Barcelona (Spain), Milan (Italy), Geneva (Switzerland), Lyon and Paris (France), London (England), Brussels (Belgium), the Netherlands, Dusseldorf and Berlin (Germany), Prague (Czech Republic), Vienna (Austria), Budapest (Hungary), Graz (Austria), and then through the Italian cities of Venice, Bologna, and Florence en route to Rome.
