Box Score JACKSON, Miss. – After sinking the defending NAIA National Champion last weekend, the Belhaven men's soccer team fell 2-1 to 18th-ranked University of Mobile on Thursday. Belhaven now stands at 8-5-0 in 2014, while the Rams remain unblemished in Southern States Athletic Conference action.
"We didn't have the necessary composure to deal with the pressure the opponent put on us or the discipline to handle the emotions of a rivalry match," Head Coach
Carl Griffiths said. "Because of that, we suffered another tough loss at home."
Clifford Nwechfom started the scoring in the 25th minute, giving the visiting Rams the only goal of the first period. Less than three minutes into the second half, however, teammate Gunnar Steindorsson found the back of the net himself to extend the lead to 2-0.
Quinton Jackson found
Victor Lawrence in the 74th minute to cut the deficit to one, but Mobile goalkeeper Xavier Audergon made sure the Blazers would not find a way to tie. Audergon recorded five saves in the match, while Belhaven counterpart
Daniel Prado prevented six shots from getting past him.
Mobile took a slight 8-6 advantage in shots on goal while also winning the battle of corner kicks by a tally of five to three. The Blazers return to action on Saturday, October 25th, when they will host Brewton-Parker College in the final home game of the season. The match is set to begin at 3:30 pm, with the Blazers honoring 13 seniors prior to the opening whistle.
