Box Score MARION, Ind. – The Belhaven men's soccer team traveled to Marion, Indiana on Friday night for another two day tournament that would pit the Blazers against two more of the top programs in the NAIA. On the strength of one goal in the opening two minutes, Indiana Wesleyan made it stand up for a 1-0 win over Belhaven to open the weekend.
After facing the 3rd and 15th ranked teams in the country last weekend in Montgomery, Alabama, the top ranked Blazers faced the host team Indiana Wesleyan (RV) on Friday and will play 9th ranked University of Rio Grande on Saturday as part of what is arguably one of the toughest schedules in the country.
Indiana Wesleyan (3-1-0) would record the only goal of the night thanks to the foot of Sam Kane in the second minute. Kane pushed the ball through the defense and tucked the shot past goalie
Carl Blundell for the unassisted goal.
Belhaven (1-2-1) had some chances, especially in the second half, when the team fired six shots on goal. Unfortunately, Josh Goepper turned away each of the attempts to preserve the shutout. Goepper took over in net for Zach Hammon at halftime, who was penciled in as the starter.
Two of the saves occurred in the final five minutes as the Blazers ratcheted up the pressure on offense to try and tie the game. Senior
Will Monsour's strike in the 86th minute was deflected and in minute 89
Victor France was denied to keep it a 1-0 contest. The Wildcats cleared the ball out of the zone in the final minute and kept Belhaven away from the net.
"Indiana Wesleyan was fantastic tonight," Belhaven Head Coach Brian McMahon said. "We have really struggled as a team to play at the intensity we need to play at to win early in season. We played in front of thousands of IWU fans tonight and credit to them for helping push on their team. As a former IWU player and alum, I wish them and Head Coach Mark Castro all the best this season."
France led the Blazers with three shots on goal and Blundell concluded the match with four saves. Belhaven had a slight edge in total shots as a team 13-10.
Geoff Bowman attempted three shots for Indiana Wesleyan, but it was Kane who was the difference maker with the only goal on two shots. Goepper made six saves to pace the Wildcats defense.
The Blazers will now look to regroup on Saturday when they face Rio Grande at 3:30 PM CDT. Fans can catch all the action through live stats and video by clicking
