Box Score JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven volleyball team (5-13, 0-6) suffered their second Southern States Athletic Conference loss of the weekend on Saturday at the hands of Emmanuel College (14-5, 4-1) at Rugg Arena.
"This team was exactly what we were expecting, and we knew we were going to have to play extremely well to win," Head Coach
Justin Dee said. "We had some mix-ups in our blocking, and that's something we'll work on practice as we head into our match against Loyola Tuesday."
Senior
Brittany Ammons finished her day as the Blazers team leader in kills with 10, while sophomore
Taylor Hall added eight of her own. Junior setter
Alyson Plyler assisted on 27 of the team's 32 kills on the afternoon, but the home team was unable to overcome problems from behind the service line.
"We had two aces and six errors, so we lost four points in the serving game," Dee said. "Those mistakes are tough to overcome, and it's one of the reasons we lost today."
Belhaven spread the wealth on the defensive side, as
Gabriella Zorzoli and
Jackie Gunderson accumulated 10 digs apiece.
Katherine Owen chalked up nine more, while
Abbigayl Herman accounted for eight.
Megan Bright led the offensive charge, tallying 15 kills for the visitors, while Becca Graham was the team leader in assists with 19. Becky Moye sparked her team with 15 digs en route to being the lone Lion player in double digits.
The Blazers return to Southern States Athletic Conference play on Tuesday night in New Orleans, where they will take on Loyola University. The match is set to begin at 7:00 pm.
"I believe we will have an opportunity to win, but we will have to set the tone right off the bat," Dee said. "We have to execute on all cylinders."
