Blazers Come up Short at Campbellsville (KY)

Box Score CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The Belhaven football team is still in search of its first Mid-South Conference West Division win after falling at Campbellsville University (KY) 54-22 on Saturday afternoon. The Blazers held a 15-7 lead at the end of the first quarter, but after that it was all Campbellsville. The Tigers outscored Belhaven 47-7 in the final three quarters to take home the win.

Campbellsville (2-2, 2-0 MSC) scored the game's first touchdown after forcing a Belhaven (1-4, 0-2 MSC) fumble on the first play from scrimmage. The Tigers were in the end zone on three plays, all runs from tailback Ben Axon. His seven yard touchdown made it a 7-0 contest at the 13:57 mark of the first quarter.

Belhaven's offense countered quickly when Laderick Turner's 20 yard kickoff return gave the Blazers good field position on their 33 yard line. On a second and 10 play, quarterback Darrell Williams went to the air and found wide receiver Deuce Coon for a 67 yard touchdown strike. Alonso Acosta's extra point attempt was blocked maintaining a 7-6 lead for the Tigers.

The Blazers took the lead with 11:44 to play in the first period when an errant snap sailed over the head of punter Eric Krivitsky and bounded 34 yards into the end zone for a safety. Belhaven then expanded the lead to 15-7 on a four yard touchdown run by tailback Rashad Wynes with 6:08 to go on the first quarter clock.

Unfortunately, three straight touchdowns to begin the second quarter swung the momentum squarely on the side of Campbellsville. Axon ran in his second touchdown of the day from eight yards out to cap an 81 yard drive with 13:42 to go in the half. Two minutes later Dem Gipson caught a 44 yard pass from quarterback Brian Parnes for a touchdown and then Gipson weaved his way through a wall of defenders for a 70 yard punt return for another TD. When the dust settled, the scoreboard showed Campbellsville with a 28-15 lead.

Belhaven closed the gap back to one touchdown midway through the second quarter on a 19 yard pass from Williams to Coon, capping a seven play 77 yard drive making it a 28-22 game. Unfortunately, it didn't stay a one score game for long as running back Larry Walls made it a two possession game again with just over a minute to go in the half. Walls two yard touchdown run expanded the Tigers lead to 35-22.

Campbellsville tacked on three more touchdowns in the second half starting with a Parnes 20 yard throw to Trevor Chatman. Parnes then ran the ball in himself from five yards out and Seth McFerrin capped the afternoon with a one yard TD early in the fourth quarter.

Williams highlighted the offense for Belhaven completing 20 of 34 passes for 262 yards and two touchdowns. Coon made 10 catches for 173 yards and two touchdowns, both single game career highs. Wynes was Belhaven's leading rusher, carrying the ball eight times for 32 yards and touchdown. As a team, the Blazers recorded 361 yards of total offense.

Darius Wren and Gregory Goree anchored the Blazers on defense with nine and seven tackles respectively Wren also forced a fumble and had had 2.5 tackles for a loss.
