Blazers Stay Hot with Key SSAC Win at Southern Poly

Box Score MARIETTA, Ga. – The Belhaven men's soccer team ran their winning streak to six matches in a row on Thursday, thanks to a 5-2 Southern States Athletic Conference win at 12th ranked Southern Polytechnic State University. The Blazers, ranked 4th in the latest NAIA Top 25 Coaches' Poll, rallied from an early deficit to win on the road.

Earning a victory is a difficult task when it comes to playing an SSAC foe like Southern Polytechnic State away from Jackson. "Southern Poly is a fantastic team especially at home so to go on the road and get an SSAC win was big for us today," Belhaven Head Coach Brian McMahon said. "The guys showed a lot of character today by coming from behind on the road to get the win."

Southern Poly (5-2-1, 1-2-0 SSAC) struck first midway through the seventh minute on a goal from Omar Kanteh, the Hornets top player coming into the match. The goal by Kanteh was his team high sixth on the season. He received help from teammate Ahmed Zaky, who provided the assist on the play.

It took some time for the Belhaven (7-2-1, 3-0-0 SSAC) offense to find its rhythm against a tough Southern Poly defense, but once things got rolling shots began to find the back of the net. Junior Nasser Charif broke through first for his fifth goal of the season, tying him for the team lead. Senior David Major provided the assist on the goal that evened the match at 1-1 in the 23rd minute.

Charif's volley opened a string of three straight Blazer scores that secured the lead for the rest of the afternoon. Goal number two in that span was recorded by senior Rodrigo Suarez who found the back of the net for the first time in 2013. It also happened to be the official game winner since Belhaven maintained the advantage from the 39th minute on. Sophomore Victor France claimed the assist as the Blazers headed into the half with a 2-1 edge.

Jose Sergio Presti was the next Blazer to find the stat sheet with his second goal of the year in the opening moments of the second half. Two precision passes by senior Will Monsour and junior Victor Lawrence moved the ball up the field and through the defense finding its way safely onto the foot of Presti, who planted the strike into the back of the net.

Trailing 3-1, Southern Poly closed the gap to one in the 60th minute on an unassisted goal by Kirk DeBoer. However, just a few minutes went by before the Blazers countered again and pushed the lead back to two goals. This time sophomore Jermaine Metz did the honors with his second goal of the 2013 season in the 70th minute. Monsour earned his second assist of the match and fourth of the season with another perfect pass. Freshman Lucas Befi capped the match in the 79th minute with his second goal of the year. Charif, who had scored earlier in the match, provided the helping hand with an assist on the goal that gave Belhaven the 5-2 win.

Charif ended the match with a team high three shots, resulting in the one goal with the addition of one assist. The five goals Belhaven put on the board were the most by an opponent against Southern Poly in the seven year history of the Hornets program. The Blazers have now outscored opponents 28-4 in the last six matches.

Senior goalie Carl Blundell played all 90 minutes and made three saves en route to his seventh win of the season. Charlie Deloatche played all 90 minutes in goal for Southern Poly, allowing five goals with five saves.

Kanteh took a game high eight shots and had one goal for Southern Poly on the offensive end of the field.

The Blazers will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Brewton-Parker College for another SSAC match at 3:30 PM.
