Blazers Slide Past Emmanuel in SSAC Opener

Box Score JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven men's soccer team opened up the Southern States Athletic Conference schedule with a 3-0 win over Emmanuel College (GA) Friday night at "The Bowl". Both teams battled through soggy conditions before the match was shortened to 70 minutes due to heavy rain. It was also the first match played under the brand new lights that were recently installed at the field.

Belhaven (5-2-1, 1-0 SSAC) scored two early goals to take the lead and set the tone for the rest of the match. Senior Will Monsour drilled the first of his two goals on the night in the fifth minute to make it a 1-0 contest. Monsour received a pass through the middle from Vijay Brahmbhatt and hammered the ball into the corner of the net past goalie Sebastian Jones.

Just under four minutes later, junior Victor Lawrence found the back of the net for the first time in 2013, extending the advantage to 2-0. Junior Jose Sergio Presti put a touch pass in front of Lawrence to setup the strike. Presti was given credit for the assist, his first of the season.

Belhaven's final goal of the night came off the foot of Monsour, who now has a grand total of five on the season to lead the team. Senior David Major aided Monsour on the shot in the 35th minute of the match, earning his first assist of the 2013 campaign.

The Blazers defense was solid again on Friday night, holding Emmanuel (5-1, 0-1 SSAC) to just three shots in the contest. All three were on goal and Blazer goalkeeper Carl Blundell deflected all of them safely away from the goal en route to his fifth win of the season.

"Coming into the game we knew how good Emmanuel was going to be," said Belhaven Head Coach Brian McMahon. "They came into the match 5-0 and had a lot of confidence. The weather conditions were challenging for both teams so scoring a goal early helped settle us down."

Andrew Tanner, Scott Purdue, and Alex Wright each had one shot for the Lions. Jones surrendered all three goals while making two saves. Emmanuel was outshot by the Blazers 9-3.

Belhaven will take the field again for another SSAC contest against Southern Wesleyan University Saturday night at 7:00 PM. The match will be played at H.T. Newell Field following the Belhaven football and women's soccer games.
