Box Score JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven men's soccer team turned in the first shutout of the season Wednesday night, blanking Texas College 6-0 in a non-conference match at H.T. Newell Field. The Blazers, ranked 10th in the latest NAIA Top 25 Coaches' Poll, dominated the Steers with a commanding 26-4 edge in shot attempts and took control of the match with three first half goals.
Sophomore
Tom Gavin set the tone for the night in the fifth minute with an unassisted goal to get things rolling. Gavin took advantage of a deflection 20 yards away in the middle of the field and placed the ball into the back of the net for a 1-0 Belhaven lead.
Senior
Will Monsour increased the Belhaven lead in the 20th minute on his second goal of the season. Junior
Nasser Charif picked up the assist with a pass through the middle of the defense to find an open Monsour. The assist was the start of what would be a huge night for Charif.
The Blazer midfielder would go on to score the next two Belhaven goals in the 37th and 65th minutes respectively. Charif was aided on the first by senior
Eduardo Cruz and then turned in a solo shot and score on the second. Charif now owns a team high three goals and seven points after picking up five points on Wednesday.
Belhaven continued to apply the pressure late into the game with unassisted goals from
Edison Sanchez in the 88th minute and
Theodore Stamatopoulos in the 90th minute. The Blazers had two other potential goals waived off due to offside infractions. With the offensive explosion, Belhaven had the opportunity to play 26 players in the match giving them some valuable game experience.
"The weekend experience playing at Indiana Wesleyan and Rio Grande was a fantastic opportunity to see some of the best teams in the country so tonight the guys were hungry to play well," Belhaven Head Coach Brian McMahon said. "I thought we started the game well and credit Texas College for having a compact defense and being organized. It took us a little while to have some success, but throughout the course of the game we wore them down a little bit and the guys off the bench did a great job today as well."
Monsour and Sanchez each took four shots to pace the Blazers in attempts followed by
Victor France with three shots. Goalkeeper
Carl Blundell played all 90 minutes in net and made three saves on the night. As a team, Belhaven (3-2-1) not only had the edge in shot attempts but in corners as well at 6-0.
Texas College (1-4-0) was led on offense by Luis Sandoval with two shots, including one on goal. Goalkeeper Gustavo Torres logged all 90 minutes for the Steers and allowed six goals with nine saves.
Belhaven will be back on the field Saturday when the team travels to Louisiana College for an 8:00 PM match with the Wildcats.
