Box Score JACKSON, Miss – The Belhaven women's soccer team put their undefeated season on the line Wednesday evening when they travelled across the street to Millsaps College. After outshooting the Majors 19-9, the Blazers improved to 5-0 with a 1-0 victory, their third shutout in their last four matches.
"We've been trying to create a mentality of breaking through," assistant coach
Jessica Monarch said. "Being 5-0 is a fantastic start to this year, and these girls have a lot to be proud of."
The lone goal of the night came in the 61st minute when midfielder
Ashley Ventura found the back of the net for the third time of her senior campaign after a corner kick. Freshman goalkeeper
Isabelle Granlund added four saves to give her 14 for the year, compared to only two goals allowed.
The 5-0 start is the best start for the women's soccer program since 2008, when their first lost came on the road against Millsaps by a final of 3-2. The 2008 team finished 11-7-1, a mark this year's squad hasn't even considered yet.
"We are trying to take things one game at a time, and there's some things we need to fix moving forward," Monarch said. "We need to work on getting results when we have opportunities, but we are grateful for the win tonight."
Belhaven will again put their undefeated season on the line Saturday when they head to Pineville, Louisiana to take on Louisiana College. The match is set to begin at 6:00 pm.
