Box Score MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Following an emotional match against third ranked Lindsey Wilson College that ended in a 2-2 draw Friday night, the Belhaven men's soccer team battled another top 25 team in 15th ranked Ashford University (Iowa) Saturday night. The Blazers lost for the first time this season by a final of 2-1 on day two of the Capital City Classic hosted by Auburn University-Montgomery at the Emory Folmar Soccer Complex.
All the scoring in Saturday's match took place in the first half with both defense's controlling the final 45 minutes. Things looked good early for Belhaven (1-1-1) when senior
David Major connected on his second goal of the season for a 1-0 Blazers lead in the eighth minute. Senior
Eduardo Cruz served up a perfect corner kick that landed on Major's foot in the front of the goal. Cruz was credited with his second assist of the season.
Unfortunately, the Belhaven offense would go silent for the rest of the match against a tough Ashford (2-1) defense. The Saints tied the game at one all in the 18th minute on a shot by Lucas Almeida that ricocheted off the post and then off goalkeeper
Carl Blundell into the back of the net. Ashford notched the game winner in the 21st minute when Tim Krautheim struck the ball into the goal off a pass from Javier Ramirez who was credited with the assist.
The Blazers had some additional chances, outshooting the Saints 15-9 in addition to an 11-3 advantage in corner kicks. The ball just didn't bounce their way Saturday night.
Cruz led Belhaven with three shot attempts followed by Major with two shots and the only goal. Blundell took the loss in net, allowing both goals while making two saves.
Almeida produced four shots for the Saints including the goal in the 18th minute. Goalie Patrick Kinsella played all 90 minutes in net for Ashford to pick up the win. He made three saves to preserve the victory.
Belhaven will head north to Indiana to play in Indiana Wesleyan's tournament on Friday and Saturday. The Blazers will take on the host school Friday night at 7:00 PM followed by a showdown with 9th ranked Rio Grande on Saturday afternoon at 4:30 PM.
