MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Belhaven women's tennis team fell 7-2 to the defending NAIA national champions, Auburn-Montgomery on Friday afternoon. Belhaven hung tough in a few matches that could have turned the outcome, but the Warhawks had just enough to pull off the win.
Belhaven and Auburn-Montgomery split first and third doubles to start off the match.
Savannah Zachry and
Shelley Munn found themselves in an all-important battle at second doubles that would either give the Blazers an advantage or put them in a 2-1 hole.
Munn and Zachry had a late lead in the match, but the Warhawks second doubles duo won the last few games down the stretch to pull out a gritty 8-6 win.
The Blazers looked to rebound in singles, getting a victory at the sixth flight to even the match score at two all.
Auburn-Montogmery's All-Americans' Jade Curtis and Tiffany William won at the top two singles spots quickly, but Belhaven held their own at three and four.
Natalia Krier rebounded after a tough 6-1 first set loss to battle to a tie-breaker in the second set. Warhawks' Chanel Cunningham snuck past Krier in the tiebreaker to take the straight set victory and clinching the match for AUM.
Zachry also played well in singles, taking Fernanda Vargas to the brink in a two set loss. She came from behind several times, but ended up just on the losing end 6-7, 4-6.
