JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven baseball team kept rolling Friday night thanks to a Southern States Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep of Southern Wesleyan University (SC) at Smith-Wills Stadium. The Blazers took game one 3-0 on another strong performance by starting pitcher
Chris Good, who picked up his fourth complete game and third shutout of the season. Belhaven rallied from an early 2-0 deficit in game two and pulled away for a 12-2 victory.
Belhaven (23-12, 9-5 SSAC) has now won six straight games and 12 of its last 13 contests. The Blazers have also taken eight straight SSAC wins after having started league play 1-5, and now find themselves in fourth place in the SSAC.
Game One
Good got Belhaven going in the right direction by keeping the Southern Wesleyan (11-18, 4-10 SSAC) hitters off balance for the entire first game. Good did not allow a hit until the sixth inning and it would prove to be the only hit for the Warriors.
Andrew Howard matched Good through the first three innings before allowing two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Third baseman
Jason Hicks, catcher
Kyle Wheeler, and first baseman
Bud Britt collected three straight hits to begin the fourth and load the bases. Centerfielder
Reagan Rutledge drove in one run on a fielder's choice and an RBI single by right fielder
Emilio DeSilva made it a 2-0 game.
The Blazers tacked on one run in the fifth when Wheeler walked with the bases loaded, extending the lead to 3-0. That's all the run support Good would need as he cruised to his NAIA leading ninth win of the season against just two defeats. Good allowed one hit in seven innings while walking one and striking out three.
Britt and DH
Hamilton Harper each had two hits followed by Wheeler and DeSilva with one hit and one run batted in to lead the Blazers bats. Rutledge picked up his 29th stolen base of the season and would go on to add another steal in game two.
Howard pitched 4.2 innings for Southern Wesleyan and suffered the loss. Howard surrendered three runs on nine hits with a walk and one strikeout dropping his record to 0-2. Left fielder Michael Hyman had the only hit for the Warriors with a single in the sixth inning.
Game Two
Belhaven fell behind 2-0 in the first inning as a pair of errors led to what be the only runs of the night for Southern Wesleyan. The Blazers would answer with two in the third, two in the fourth, seventh in the sixth and one in the seventh to put the run rule into effect.
In the third, Belhaven loaded the bases with three straight singles from shortstop
Josiah Richard, left fielder
Dominick Francia, and second baseman
Ryne Cook. Hicks pulled the Blazers within one on an RBI fielder's choice followed by a sac fly from Wheeler to knot the game at 2-2.
Belhaven took the lead in the fourth without an RBI being credited to a hitter. Rutledge scored on a wild pitch and DeSilva stole home after a throw to second base by catcher Joe Taylor was unsuccessful in getting Francia on a stolen base attempt.
The Blazers broke the contest open in the sixth on the strength of four hits and two Warriors errors. With one out, Hicks opened the flood gates with a bases loaded two run single up the middle and on the play a third run crossed the plate on a throwing error by Taylor. Pinch hitter
Caleb Baucum walked with the bases loaded to bring home another run followed by a two run single off the bat of DeSilva. Hyman then threw wildly to home allowing Rutledge to come in for the seventh run of the inning.
With two outs in the seventh, pinch hitter
Hamilton Harper singled deep in the hole at short and would score on a double down the left field line by Wheeler. Harper's run proved to be the game winner since it gave the Blazers a 12-2 lead and thus enacted the 10 run rule.
Avery Johnson earned the win for Belhaven in relief and improved his record to 2-1 on the season. Johnson pitched the fourth inning after
Jared Miller started the game and tossed the first three frames.
Hicks and DeSilva both had two hits to pace the attack at the plate for Belhaven. Hicks had three runs batted in and DeSilva brought two runners in from the bases. Wheeler also notched two more RBI's with one scoring on a two out double in the seventh. The Blazers outhit the Warriors 11-5 in game two of the twin bill.
Tim O'Callaghan gave up eight runs on eight hits with four walks and one strikeout in 5.2 innings pitched. The loss dropped his 2013 record to 2-3. Catcher Joe Taylor led Southern Wesleyan with two hits on the night.
Belhaven will wrap up the three game series on Saturday afternoon at Smith-Wills Stadium starting at 1:00 PM.
