Blazers Win Streak Snapped at Freed-Hardeman

Box Score
HENDERSON, Tenn. – The Belhaven baseball team saw its five game winning streak come to an end at Freed-Hardeman Wednesday afternoon, falling to the 22nd ranked Lions 10-1. Freed-Hardeman jumped on the Blazers with four runs in the first and from that point on Belhaven couldn't recover. Despite the loss, the Blazers finished the five game road swing that started at Loyola with a 4-1 record.

Freed-Hardeman (20-2-1) set the tone in the first collecting three hits while taking advantage of a costly error to plate the four runs. Center fielder Justin Mackey reached on an error by third baseman Jason Hicks with one out and DH Kyle Dearing scored on the play to make it 1-0. Then with the bases loaded and two outs, first baseman Joe Mike bounced a single up the middle on an 0-2 pitch, driving in two more runs that extended the lead to 3-0. The inning would end on a fielder's choice by Jake Todd, but before the tag on the runner could be made, right fielder Bob Seda crossed the plate for the fourth run.

In the bottom of the third, the Lions took advantage of another Belhaven (17-12) error to plate three more runs. With two outs, pitcher Jared Miller made an errant throw to first base on a ground ball back to the mound off the bat of Seda, allowing the inning to continue. Left fielder Garrett Ferguson singled in Seda from second and crossed the plate on a two run homer by Mike.

Freed-Hardeman then added solo runs in the fourth, fifth, and seventh innings accounting for their 10 runs on the afternoon. Belhaven got on the board for the only time in the fifth when catcher Kyle Wheeler doubled with one out and courtesy runner Daniel Gilbert scored on an error by second baseman Connor Kohlscheen. Other than that, the Blazers offense was shut down by starting pitcher Dan Creighton.

The Blazers, who were coming off one of their best offensive showings on Tuesday, were limited to six hits by Freed-Hardeman. Hicks and left fielder Reagan Rutledge had two hits each followed by Wheeler and first baseman Bud Britt with one hit apiece. The only one that went for extra bases was Wheeler's double to left center in the fifth.

Drew Broyles (1-1) suffered his first loss of the season allowing four runs on three hits in the first. Only three of the four runs were earned due to the error. Of the Lions 10 runs, only four would go in the scorebook as being earned.

Mike had a dominating afternoon for Freed-Hardeman, leading the Lions at the plate with three hits and five runs batted in. Ferguson was 2 for 4 with two RBI while Seda had two hits and four runs scored. Dearing had a pair of hits and Mackey wrapped up the game with one hit for the Lions.

Creighton remained unbeaten on the mound as he improved to 5-0 in 2013 with the victory. Creighton pitched eight of the nine frames limiting the Blazers to the one unearned run on four hits with five strikeouts. He did not give up the first hit until the fifth inning.

Belhaven will look to regroup on Friday when the team returns to Smith-Wills Stadium to open a three game Southern States Athletic Conference series against Auburn University-Montgomery. The first pitch is slated for 6:00 PM.
