Blazers Advance to SSAC Semifinals

Box Score JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven men's soccer team picked up a key victory on Saturday night with a 4-1 victory over Southern Wesleyan University in the Southern States Athletic Conference quarterfinals. The Blazers, in hopes of defending their 2012 National Championship, now move on to the SSAC semifinals Thursday in Montgomery, Alabama.

"The nature of our conference is difficult, and Southern Wesleyan is another fantastic team," Head Coach Brian McMahon said. "We knew they would be a big challenge, and this game was closer than the score showed."

Jermaine Metz connected with David Major in the 28th minute for the first goal of the night, and the scoring concluded for the first half. Major's night wasn't over just yet, however, as Major struck again 20 minutes into the second half with his sixth goal of the year.

"I thought David would serve the team better with his attacking presence off the bench, and he responded in a fantastic way," McMahon said. "He is a senior veteran, and I'm proud of the way he played."

Three minutes later, Major added to his big night with an assist when Will Monsour found the back of the net for the sixth time of his senior campaign. While the Blazers were settling in to a comfortable 3-0 lead, the Warriors' Jonathan Ruiz cut into the lead, sneaking a shot past goalkeeper Carl Blundell.

Despite several opportunities, Ruiz' goal would be the lone tally on the scoreboard for Southern Wesleyan for the duration of the match. Belhaven's Marco Pavlin got in on the scoring action late with his first goal of the year, while Monsour was credited with his fifth assist.

Blundell finished his night with three saves, while two more close shots found the left post of the goal. Warrior goalie Ruben Rodriguez countered by recording one save, but Belhaven outshot their guests by a total of 13-11. The home Blazers also ended up with the advantage in corner kicks by a margin of 4-2.

Belhaven will return to action on November 14th against a familiar foe with the University of Mobile. The Blazers defeated the Rams 2-0 in last year's National Championship and 4-0 earlier this season. Mobile advanced to the semifinals with a 2-0 upset over top-seeded Auburn University-Montgomery. The match will be played in Montgomery, Alabama.

"I have all the respect in the world for Mobile because they will be a challenge for us," McMahon said. "They are as good as it gets in the country, and they always seem to bring out the best in us."
