Blazers Set to Host Southern Wesleyan in SSAC Tournament

JACKSON, Miss. – The 2013 postseason begins for the Belhaven men's soccer team on Saturday in the quarterfinals of the Southern States Athletic Conference tournament. The Blazers, ranked 17th in the latest NAIA Top 25 Coaches' Poll, will host Southern Wesleyan University at H.T. Newell field starting at 5:00 PM.

Belhaven enters the postseason with a 12-5-1 overall record and are the number four seed in the SSAC tournament. The Blazers finished up conference play with a record of 8-3 and were fourth in the league standings. Southern Wesleyan closed out the season with a 9-5-2 record. The Warriors were fifth in the league standings with a 6-4-1 SSAC mark. This will be the second meeting of the season between the two teams. Belhaven won the first battle on September 21st 6-0 in Jackson.

The Blazers are led by senior forward Eduardo Cruz who enters the tournament with eight goals and five assists, both stats are team highs. Cruz also owns 21 points in 2013. Freshman mid-fielder Lucas Befi is second on the team in points with 16 and has six goals and four assists. Belhaven has been a very balanced team this season offensively with seven players recording four or more goals this year. Defensively, goalie Carl Blundell has anchored the net in all but one match this season. Blundell has made 54 saves and allowed only 18 goals.

Southern Wesleyan is led by Douglas Andrade who owns nine goals and three assists in 2013. Three other players have scored four goals apiece and Goalie Ruben Rodriguez has spent the majority of time in the net with 65 saves in 15 games. Rodriguez boasts a record of 7-5-2 coming into the weekend.
