Box Score MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Belhaven women's soccer team saw the 2013 season come to a close on Saturday afternoon with a 3-2 overtime defeat at the hands of Auburn University-Montgomery. The Blazers finish with a 9-8 overall record, including a 3-8 mark in Southern States Athletic Conference action.
"This was one of the best games we played all year, and I saw a team play for one another today," Head Coach
Josue Sabillon said. "These girls didn't get rattled and played their hearts out, so I am very proud of this team."
After trailing 1-0 just 19 minutes into the match,
Laura Quintero found
Ashley Harber to help get the Blazers on the scoreboard. Harber's fifth goal of the season tied the game at 1-1, though the tie would only hold for six minutes.
In the 57th minute, Dagmar Gunnarsdottir snuck a shot past Belhaven keeper
Isabelle Granlund to give the Warhawks a 2-1 advantage. Granlund ended her day with four saves after AUM outshot their guests 15-9.
"Isabelle was a big reason this game was close," Sabillon said. "She played amazing today."
With one player out due to her second yellow card, the Blazers were forced to finish regulation with 10 players.
Fran Glenny fired her team best 10th goal of the season in the 87th minute to eventually send the match to overtime.
Less than a minute into the overtime period, the Warhawks' Lila Remache launched a devastating shot into the net to give her team a sudden death victory. The Blazers could have still earned a postseason bid with Bethel defeating Spring Hill. That match, however, ended in a 0-0 tie after two overtime periods, and Belhaven's season abruptly concluded.
"Obviously, this season didn't turn out the way we had planned, but this team has loads of determination, heart, and grit," Sabillon said. "We matched up well with a good team today, and these girls should have no regrets."
