Belhaven (14-5-1) and Mobile (9-9) returned to the site of the 2012 NAIA National Championship game setting up a rematch between the two national title contenders. The Blazers have now won three straight over the Rams, including last year's National Championship game. Belhaven won the only regular season meeting this year 4-0 in Mobile.
"Today's match was a great contest between two outstanding programs," said Belhaven Head Coach Brian McMahon. "We have all the respect in the world for Mobile and their coaching staff. Every time we play Mobile it brings out the best in both teams and it always makes for an exciting match."
Thursday's match was dominated by both defenses as evidenced by a combined four shots on goal between the two teams. Fortunately for Belhaven, one of those snuck past goalkeeper Elijah Gibson for the game winner.
In the 13th minute, the Blazers were able to get an attack going led by Monsour and
Cillian Thompson. Thompson crossed a pass through the Rams defense setting up Monsour for the shot. On one touch, Monsour tucked the ball into the goal for what would be the only score of the day. For Monsour, it was his seventh goal of the season and the second assist for Thompson.
Meanwhile, Belhaven goalie
Carl Blundell denied two potential first half scoring opportunities for Mobile with a pair of saves. Both shots were taken by Alvaro Pichardo, but Blundell was up to the challenge. The Rams only mustered three shots in the second half, none of which were on goal. The Blazers doubled up Mobile on the stat sheet with 14-7 edge in total shots.
Belhaven will play Martin Methodist on Saturday in the championship game at 3:30 PM. Martin Methodist defeated Southern Poly 2-1 in Thursday's other semifinal match.
