Box Score HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Belhaven men's soccer team dropped its second consecutive Southern States Athletic Conference contest Friday night, this time at the hands of 14th ranked William Carey University 2-0. The Blazers, ranked 9th in the latest NAIA Coaches' Top 25 Poll, were held off the board by a stingy Crusaders defense.
Belhaven's (11-4-1, 7-2-0 SSAC) scoring opportunities were few and far between with only three shots on goal during the 90 minutes.
Victor France had the Blazers only strike at the net in the first half and was denied by goalie Charlie Laridan.
However, it wasn't just Belhaven who struggled to get things going on the offensive end in the first half. William Carey (11-3-1, 8-1-0 SSAC) had its troubles maneuvering through the Blazers defense as well with only one look at the net. Belhaven goalie
Carl Blundell turned away Luis Trude's strike in the 33rd minute.
Unfortunately, the Blazers couldn't get in sync offensively in the second half, but the Crusaders did. Mohamed Degheb broke the scoreless tie in the 56th minute on a shot just past the outstretched hands of Blundell. Andri Jonsson provided the helping hand with a precision pass to set up the score, earning him the games only assist.
In the 70th minute, Lorris Cortjo added an insurance goal and from there the William Carey defense handled the rest. Lucas Befi and Eduaro Cruz had shots on goal turned away by Laridan in the final 10 minutes, keeping the shutout intact.
William Carey had just a slight edge in total shots at 8-7, but seven of those eight shots were on goal. Six were turned away by Blundell in his 90 minutes of work in net, but the other two slipped through to decide the contest.
France ended up with a team high two shots for the Blazers offensively while Cortijo paced the Crusaders with two of his own. Laridan played all 90 minutes in goal for William Carey, made three saves, and earned the win and shutout.
Belhaven will look to regroup next Friday when the team heads to Montgomery, Alabama to battle SSAC foe Faulkner University at 3:30 PM. The Blazers will then wrap up the regular season next Saturday at Auburn University-Montgomery at 3:30 PM.
