Blazers Upset by #23 Martin Methodist

Box Score JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven men's soccer team saw its winning streak come to an end Saturday night at H.T. Newell Field, falling to 23rd ranked Martin Methodist College 1-0 in double overtime. The Blazers, ranked 2nd in the latest NAIA Top 25 Coaches' Poll, went to extra frames for the second consecutive night, but unlike Friday's 2-1 victory over Bethel, couldn't find the game winning kick.

"We are still a little bit out of rhythm after our break and it showed again tonight," Belhaven Head Coach Brian McMahon said. "Martin Methodist did a great job in their counter attack and defended really well. However, we missed a lot of opportunities to score tonight and missed a penalty kick, but that's the nature of the game and sometimes things just don't go your way."

Both teams had their chances in the first half with the goalkeepers combining to make seven saves in the opening period. Belhaven (11-3-1, 7-1-0 SSAC) arguably had the best chance on a penalty kick by Eduardo Cruz. A Martin Methodist foul in the box set up the shot, but unfortunately for the Blazers it missed the mark keeping it a scoreless game.

Shots continued to fly in the second period when the teams combined for five more saves, sending the contest into overtime. In the first overtime frame shots by Belhaven's Victor Lawrence and Will Monsour were both turned away by Martin Methodist (7-3-1, 4-2-1 SSAC) goalie Stephen Lunney. Another strike by Cillian Thompson hit the crossbar and bounded back into the field of play.

With time winding down in the second overtime, it appeared the match would end with a scoreless draw. However, the Redhawks had a different plan. With under a minute to play, Felix Kristofferson lined up for a corner kick and dropped the ball into the middle of the box. After a couple of deflections, Kenneth Monge tapped the ball to Juan Madrigal who planted the ball into the back of the net with 49 seconds on the clock. The goal gave Martin Methodist the victory.

Monsour had a team high five shots for Belhaven with four of them stopped by Lunney at the net. Blundell made six saves and the Blazers had two other team saves for a total of eight on the night.

Michael Fulton led all players with six shot attempts for the Redhawks. Martin Methodist edged Belhaven 18-16 in total shot attempts. Lunney made eight saves for a shutout victory.

Belhaven will now look to regroup after suffering their first loss since September 6th in a 1-0 decision at Indiana Wesleyan University. The Blazers will battle William Carey University on the road Friday night at 7:30 PM.

"We play a fantastic William Carey team next week and we know they will be ready for us," McMahon added. "It will be a very difficult game for us as well and we will have to play at a high level to bring home a victory."
