Box Score JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven men's soccer team reeled off its eighth consecutive win Wednesday night on the strength of an 4-0 decision over Southern States Athletic Conference rival Spring Hill College at H.T. Newell Field. The Blazers, ranked fourth in the latest NAIA Top 25 Coaches' Poll, controlled the match from start to finish, outshooting the Badgers on offense 24-6.
Belhaven (9-2-1, 5-0 SSAC) and Spring Hill (5-6-0, 2-3-0 SSAC) played to a stalemate through the first nine minutes, but in the 10th
Eduardo Cruz found the back of the net for the fifth time this season to make it a 1-0 Blazer lead.
Victor Lawrence and Lucas Befi were both credited with assists after the duo generated a pair of precision passes through the Spring Hill defense, setting up Cruz for the shot in the middle of the field.
The Blazers added their second goal of the match in the 14th minute when Befi played a high hop off the turf and tucked a shot past Spring Hill goalie Jacob Files into the corner of the net. The unassisted score was Befi's third of the 2013 season.
Befi would have a hand in Belhaven's third goal of the night as well, providing another assist on a strike by
Victor Lawrence. It was Befi's fourth assist of the year and the third goal of the season for Lawrence. It gave the Blazers a 3-0 edge in the 52nd minute.
Felipe Ferreira capped the night with his second goal of the season as time was winding down in the 89th minute. Ferreira took a free kick following a Badger foul and blasted his shot into the top shelf, resulting in the 4-0 final.
"Coming into tonight's match we knew that Spring Hill was a very good team," Belhaven Head Coach Brian McMahon said. "I thought Lucas Befi did a great job for us tonight and stepped in well for an injured
Will Monsour. The team trusts him a lot and he did an excellent job providing a spark on offense for us tonight."
Lawrence and
Tom Gavin led the Blazers in total shots with three apiece while
Carl Blundell earned his eighth win of the season in goal. Blundell played all 90 minutes and in the process made three saves. It was also his fourth shutout of the 2013 campaign.
Spring Hill was limited to six shots with Esteban Angel taking two of them. Files logged all 90 minutes in goal and ended the match with eight saves.
Up next for Belhaven is a road trip to 19th ranked University of Mobile on Saturday. It will be the first time the two teams have met since the 2012 National Championship game.
"There is no doubt that the Mobile match is a special game," McMahon added. "Coach Patton and the guys are an absolutely fantastic team. The realistic thing I tell my guys is we could play our best and still not come away with a result against Mobile because they are that good of a team. They are very creative, their attack is fantastic and we'll do our best to get ready for them."
Saturday's kickoff is slated for 7:30 PM.
