Box Score JACKSON, Miss. – After recognizing the program's eight seniors before the match, the Belhaven women's soccer team (9-5-0, 3-5-0 SSAC) fell by a final of 2-0 on Saturday evening at H.T. Newell Field. The defeat came at the hands of Martin Methodist College (10-2-1, 6-1-0 SSAC), who is thriving in their first year in the Southern States Athletic Conference.
"We can't make mistakes against teams like this, and we made two early ones tonight," Belhaven Head Coach
Josue Sabillon said. "We played with grit, but those two early lapses caught up to us."
Sabrina Gonzalez scored the first goal of the night just four minutes into the game, her first score of the season. When teammate Jennifer Loewen found the back of the net seven minutes later, the scoring was done for the duration of the game.
The Blazers were outshot for just the third time this season, as the 9th ranked Redhawks launched 16 shots against the home team's nine. Belhaven goalkeeper
Isabelle Granlund racked up nine saves, while Martin Methodist's Jhani Williams countered with six of her own.
Belhaven will again have their hands full on Friday, as they travel to Hattiesburg to take on perennial SSAC powerhouse William Carey. The match is set to begin at 5:00 PM.
"Tonight was a setback, but we have to look to find an upset next week," Sabillon said. "That game doesn't need any extra motivation."
