JACKSON, Miss-The Belhaven men's soccer team powered its way to a 4-0 non-conference victory over Texas College Saturday afternoon at H.T. Newell Field in the home opener of 2012. The Blazers, ranked 6th in the latest NAIA Coaches' Top 25 Poll, pulled away in the second half with three goals after holding a slim 1-0 edge at the break.
The early 1-0 lead was generated by junior forward
Will Monsour, who found the back of the net in the 21st minute for the 10th time this season. Monsour came into the match leading the nation in scoring and points. Senior
Loic Miliani provided the assist raising his season total to four. Monsour and Miliani have been a potent one two punch early in the season. Monsour paces the team in goals and Miliani owns the team lead in assists (4).
Texas College (0-4) stayed close with some tough defense and pressure on the ball, but then in the 58th minute the Blazers began to break the game open. Belhaven notched three goals in the span of four minutes to take control of the match.
Miliani opened the barrage with his first goal of 2012 off a perfect pass from sophomore Nasser Chariff ten yards in front of the net. Leading 2-0, junior
Eduardo Cruz dropped a corner kick into the box where
Guilherme Sousa was waiting to send it home. Sousa capped the match a few seconds later with an unassisted goal that extended the lead to 4-0. Sousa has now accumulated three goals and two assists after Saturday's two score performance.
Belhaven (5-0) outshot Texas College 18-6 and on the season has outshot opponents 91-39. Miliani had the most looks at the goal with three on Saturday. Goalie
Carl Blundell made four saves and earned his fifth win in net. He logged all 90 minutes of the match.
“Give Texas College a lot of credit,” said Head Coach Brian McMahon. “They started the game very compact and it was difficult for us to break down their defense. We made some mistakes and tried to force the play a little too much, but we had a good halftime talk and made some adjustments. The guys came out and played well in the second half and stuck with the game plan and did a nice job.”
Alfredo Troncoso had three shots for the Steers and goalkeeper Luis Rodriguez was charged with the loss in net. He surrendered four goals and made four saves.
The Blazers hit the road again next weekend as they travel to Orange Beach, Alabama to face Embry-Riddle on Friday and the University of Texas-Brownsville on Saturday. Both contests are slated to get underway at 7:30 PM.
