MOUNT VERNON, Ga.-The Belhaven men's soccer team wrapped up its road swing through Georgia with a 6-1 Southern States Athletic Conference victory at Brewton-Parker College on Saturday afternoon. The Blazers, ranked 4th in the latest NAIA Top 25 Coaches' Poll, opened the weekend with a 5-0 win at Emmanuel College on Thursday night. Belhaven remains unscathed in the 2012 season, moving to 9-0 overall and 2-0 in the SSAC.
The Blazers faced some adversity early in the match when Brewton-Parker (3-5-1, 0-2 SSAC) struck for the first goal of the afternoon in the 22nd minute. The teams were at a 0-0 stalemate until Leonardo Pinto drove the ball into the back of the net from 25 yards out to make it a 1-0 game. Pinto's shot was setup off a volley that opened the net for the score.
Belhaven, not having to play from behind very often this season, rose to the challenge and reeled off six unanswered goals for the win. Junior forward
Will Monsour, the reigning NAIA Offensive Player of the Week, provided the equalizer in the 26th minute to make it 1-1. Nasser Chariff setup the goal and was credited with an assist. Chariff's pass set the table for a one on one showdown between Monsour and goalie Damian O'Hare that resulted in the goal.
Just over a minute later, senior midfielder
Guilherme Sousa connected on what would prove to be the game winning shot of the match. Belhaven's offensive pressure produced a corner kick from senior mid-fielder
Giovanni Correa that directly led to Sousa's goal. Correa's corner was placed with pinpoint accuracy into the box where Sousa headed it for a 2-1 lead.
Belhaven maintained a 2-1 edge until the 52nd minute when
Marco Pavlin picked up his first goal of the 2012 campaign. Junior forward
Eduardo Cruz executed a crossing pass over to sophomore midfielder
Victor Lawrence who in turn fed the ball to Pavlin for the goal, extending the lead to 3-1. Cruz's turn to score came around in the 56th minute on a penalty kick following a Brewton-Parker foul that occurred in the box.
Belhaven's lead grew to 5-1 in the 63rd minute on Monsour's second goal of the night and team leading 15th of the season. This time it was unassisted as Monsour cut inside the box from the left side and slipped the ball past O'Hare into the net.
The Blazers put the final touches on the match when junior midfielder
Felipe Ferreira and junior forward
Jake Benton teamed up for the sixth goal of the afternoon in the 74th minute. Benton put the ball on the foot Ferreira in front of the keeper and from there Ferreira wrapped the ball around O'Hare on the left side and into the back of the net for the goal.
Belhaven Head Coach Brian McMahon was proud of his team's performance and the composure they played with this weekend. “The conference is so difficult that anytime you go on the road and get a couple wins it's important,” said McMahon. “Both teams gave us a good test, and I was proud of the guys. I think we showed a lot of patience through the course of the weekend and the depth on the bench has been a major help for us. We talk a lot about facing adversity and give credit to Brewton-Parker, who scored such a great goal to open the match. However, I felt like we embraced adversity as a team and didn't panic. We showed a lot of patience and the guys responded really well at 1-0 by forcing the play and pressuring our opponent.”
Depth and outstanding team play have been major reasons for Belhaven's success this season. Following Saturday's match, 15 different players have had at least one assist or goal through the first nine matches of the year. Three players have five goals or more and two players have at least five assists.
Goalie
Carl Blundell, who started the first eight matches of the season for Belhaven, had the night off with sophomore
Steeven Raymont seeing his first action in 2012 on Saturday. The Blazers didn't miss a beat with Raymont, who played all 90 minutes and earned the win. Belhaven had five players with at least three shots in the match and as a team outshot Brewton-Parker 22-4.
The Barons offense was limited to Pinto's first half goal as the majority of the match was played on Brewton-Parkers end of the field. O'Hare logged all 90 minutes in front of the net and made five saves.
The Blazers return home for their next match on Friday against SSAC foe Southern Polytechnic State University. The kickoff is slated for 2:30 PM at H.T. Newell Field.
