JACKSON, Miss.- The Belhaven football team broke through for its first win of the season on Saturday afternoon and did it in fine fashion, topping Campbellsville University 70-28 on a record setting day at H.T. Newell Field. The Blazers shattered three school records including most points scored in a game, most touchdowns in a game (10), and most extra points in a game (10). Belhaven broke the contest open in the second and third quarters with eight consecutive TD's en route to a key Mid-South Conference West Division win.
Belhaven's 70 points broke the previous record of 58 scored against Cumberland University (TN) on November 12, 2005. Also in that same game, the Blazers piled up eight touchdowns which were the most in school history until Saturday. The previous extra point record was seven, occurring three times in school history. The most recent was on September 18th, 2010 against Lindsey Wilson College. Saturday's combined point total of 98 was also the most points ever in the Campbellsville vs. Belhaven series. The prior record was 95, set in a 49-46 Blazer victory in 2006.
Belhaven (1-3, 1-1 MSC) fell behind in the early stages of the game when Campbellsville (0-4, 0-2 MSC) marched 89 yards in 12 plays for the games first points with 3:32 left in the opening period. Quarterback Bryan Parnes capped the drive with a three yard plunge into the end zone to make it 7-0.
The Blazers needed a spark after a slow start in the first quarter and they got it from the defense in the opening two minutes of the second quarter. On a third down and nine play, seniors
Joshua Herring and
Jared McCarthy sacked Parnes for a loss of 13 yards back to the Tigers eight yard line forcing a punt on 4th and 22. Standing in his own end zone, Eric Krivitsky misfired badly on a punt attempt that didn't make it out of the end zone. The ball barley grazed the side of his foot and it was picked up by Belhaven freshman
Alvin Fairley for a touchdown. Senior kicker
James Bryan drilled the extra point to tie the game at 7-7.
On Campbellsville's ensuing possession, Parnes was unable to handle a shotgun snap and junior linebacker
Calvin Lewis fell on the loose ball at the Tigers 21 yard line. Belhaven senior quarterback
Alex Williams immediately went up top on the very next play and hit senior wide receiver
Kylan Pollard in the corner of the end zone for a touchdown to make it 14-7 with 13:16 left in the half.
Campbellsville fought back and pulled even at 14-14 with just over nine minutes to go in the first half. On a second down and 13 play from their own 14 yard line, Parnes found wide receiver Demytreus Gipson in the right flat and from there Gipson did the rest with a couple of good moves and broken tackles that sprung him down the sideline for the score. Gipson's catch and run set a new Campbellsville record for the longest touchdown pass.
Belhaven's offense got the ball back with 9:03 to play in the first half and put a drive together that turned the tide for the rest of the afternoon. Like a bolt of lightning, the Blazers moved down the field in a minute and forty two seconds for the go ahead score. The drive started at their own 35 yard line and culminated in a nine yard touchdown run by senior running back
Justin Gaines. Williams hit Pollard on a 20 yard pass and a pass interference penalty on Campbellsville help setup the touchdown.
Belhaven found the end zone again with 2:35 to go until the break on Gaines second touchdown. Gaines duplicated the previous touchdown by scampering in from nine yards away, extending the Blazers lead to 28-14.
The Blazers picked up right where they left off in the second half and within the first minute of the third quarter had seven more points. Campbellsville, looking for a boost to open the quarter, tried to catch Belhaven off guard with an onside kick. Junior
Ben Chapman alertly covered the ball at the Tigers 46 yard line setting up great field position for the offense. Junior running back
Kadero Edley covered all 46 yards himself with 44 of them coming on his second touchdown run of the season.
The Blazers continued to rack up the points throughout the third quarter to put the game out of reach. The next touchdown was the result of a 59 yard pass from Williams to Pollard with 10:58 on the clock. The defense took its turn lighting up the scoreboard when junior defensive back
Justin Mims picked off a Robert Hill pass in the flats and went 35 yards the other way for a touchdown.
A 49-14 Belhaven lead soon became 56-14 thanks to a 65 yard punt return for a touchdown by senior defensive back
Isiah Wiley with 7:35 left in the period. Next up was Gaines, who found the end zone again for the third time in the contest on a 30 yard run followed by a 38 yard interception return for a TD by junior linebacker
Darius Wren on the very next play from scrimmage. When the dust settled, the Blazers found themselves up 70-14 with 4:45 left in the third quarter.
Campbellsville added a couple of fourth quarter touchdowns on a six yard run by Chris Cook and an 85 yard fumble return for a touchdown by Earl McCann resulting in the final score of 70-28.
“I was proud of how our team responded this week and I felt we got better in every phase of the game,” said Belhaven Head Coach Joe Thrasher. “Alex (Williams) showed great leadership and we had multiple guys contribute. Our offensive line did a great job, our defense was effective at getting to the ball, and Wiley's punt return was a great step in our return game. I feel like this was the spark we needed and I'm thankful for a team that keeps fighting, especially after a tough first three weeks of the season.”
Belhaven's offense racked up 512 yards with 269 of them on the ground. Gaines led the charge with 105 yards and three touchdowns. Through the air, Williams displayed pinpoint control, completing 11 of 17 passes for 225 yards and two touchdowns. Pollard was on the receiving end on five of the tosses leading to 146 yards and two touchdowns.
In the tackles department on defense, Belhaven was led by freshman linebacker
Robert Groux and senior defensive end
Reese Unger with five tackles each. Unger also came up with two sacks. As a team, the Blazers turned in four sacks and had five quarterback hurries. Belhaven held Campbellsville to 275 yards of total offense.
Running back Chris Cook paced the Campbellsville offense with 60 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Quarterback Bryan Parnes threw for 147 yards and a TD, with his favorite target being Demytreus Gipson who caught five passes for 148 yards and a touchdown. Earl McCann and Blake Young led the Tigers in tackles with eight each.
Belhaven will be back on the road next weekend as the team heads to the University of Virginia College at Wise on Saturday. Kickoff is slated for 5:00 PM.
