Blazers Bounce Back with 3-0 Win over Millsaps

Box Score
JACKSON, Miss.-The Belhaven women's soccer team secured a much needed victory Tuesday night, upending cross town rival Millsaps College 3-0 at H.T. Newell Field. The win snapped a four game losing streak and could very well be a turning point in the season. The Blazers had been struggling to find the offense with all four of their losses being by just one goal, but Tuesday night proved to be a breakout performance.

Belhaven (2-4) went on the attack early an unleashed a pair of shots on goal in the opening two minutes of the contest. Although a goal did not result on the first two attempts, the Blazers were eventually rewarded for their efforts in the 21st minute when junior midfielder Jordan Organ fired a shot past goalkeeper Elise Davis for a 1-0 lead. A split second earlier, Davis made a diving save on a well struck ball by sophomore forward Rebecca Ontero, but the ball deflected away from Davis right to Organ who had an open net in front of her.

Davis stayed busy defending shots in net all night for Millsaps (2-2) and would eventually make 10 saves in the contest. The Blazers consistently kept the ball in the offensive zone and had three more shots on goal in the first half and three more to start the second before their persistence paid off again. This time freshman defender Ashley Harber was able to slide a shot past Davis with the help of a perfectly placed corner kick by freshman midfielder Laura Quintero to make it a 2-0 game in the 59th minute. The goal tied Harber with Ontero for the team lead in goals as each player now owns two on the season.

Belhaven capped the night in the 73rd minute on a goal by junior midfielder Ashley Ventura with an assist from senior midfielder Jantzen Oliver. The Blazers were able to break through the Majors defense as Oliver setup the shot a few yards in front of the goal.

Belhaven's defense was impressive again Tuesday night limiting Millsaps to eight shots in the match. The Majors best chance at a goal came in the 55th minute when Kaleigh Redhead's attempts hit the cross bar and bounced back onto the field of play. Belhaven Goalkeeper Nicole Walsh, reigning Southern States Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week, made three saves to take home her second win of the season. Walsh and the defense have allowed only one goal per match this season.

“I thought we were finally able to bring it all together tonight,” said Belhaven Head Coach Josue Sabillon. “The team showed fire and grit from beginning to end and this was a well deserved win. It was a whole different team to watch; they were moving off the ball, they were making the right runs and doing everything that we teach in practice and during our film sessions. It all came together tonight and I'm really proud of the way they played.”

The Blazers ended the night with 23 shots with Ontero and Quintero firing six apiece. Taylor Winslow and Margaret Eggers had three each for Millsaps.

Belhaven will be back in action on Saturday, hosting the University of Texas-Brownsville starting at 11:00 AM. Fans can follow all the action through live stats by clicking here.
