Blazers Shutout by #8 Brenau

COLUMBUS, Ga..-The Belhaven softball team lost on Friday afternoon to 8th ranked Brenau University 6-0 in the Southern States Athletic Conference Crossover Tournament in Columbus, GA. The game stopped after six innings due to inclement weather, which cancelled the second match up for the Blazers schedule at 5:00 PM against Southern Wesleyan. The Blazers, who received votes in the latest NAIA Top 25 Coaches' Poll, had their overall record drop to 20-11 this season.

Brenau University opened the game in the top of the second inning scoring two runs. Catcher Katie Bollin homered for the Tigers down the left line sending her and left fielder Sally Dugan across home plate.

The Tigers remained hot in the top of the third, adding three more runs bringing the score to a 5-0 advantage for Brenau. First baseman Ellen Black singled up the middle chasing in pitcher Jenny Shepard from second for the first run of the inning. Designated player Morgan Smith added the fourth run of the game when Dugan touched home plate on a fielder's choice. Finally, Black would score the last run of the inning on a bases loaded walk. Brenau tacked on its last run of the contest in the top of the fourth, when right fielder Lana Lazar took advantage of Smith's doubled to reach home.

The weather prevented the game from going to the seventh, ending the contest with a 6-0 final score in favor of the Tigers.

Shortstop Courtney Fairley and pinch hitter Ashlee Hitt carried Belhaven (20-11, SSAC 4-2) with a single hit each. In the circle for the Blazers, Jessica Paris allowed six runs on seven hits while walking two batters. She pitched 3.2 innings and was tagged with the loss, dropping her record to 7-4 on the season

Brenau University (28-8, SSAC 10-4) was led by Katie Bolin who had three RBI, one run scored, and one hit. Also, Duggan, Black, and Lazar had two hits and one run for the Tigers. Jenny Shepard pitched the entire game for Brenau, taking the win by limiting the Belhaven offense to just two hits.

The Blazers will be back in action on Saturday weather permitting, closing the SSAC Crossover Tournament by taking on Brewton-Parker at 10:00 AM EDT, Shorter University at 12:00 PM EDT, and Emmanuel College at 4:00 PM EDT.
