CLEVELAND, Ga. -- The Belhaven women's basketball team capped off a perfect Georgia road trip by defeating the Truett-McConnell Bears 59-34 in Southern States Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon. The Blazers used suffocating defense to spur them to their second conference victory in a row.
Belhaven's offense was off the mark in the first half, which has become a bit of a trend early on in the season. The Blazers overcame a tough first half performance against Brenau on Friday night, trailing by double digits before ultimately winning by nine points.
As frustrating as the offense has been for Belhaven, their defense has been incredibly dominant at times.
Despite only scoring 20 points in the first half against the Bears, Belhaven was able to hold their opponent to just 18 of their own to carry a two-point lead at the break.
The Blazers turned on the gas in the second half, quickly turning their small lead into a 43-31 ball game with 12 minutes remaining in the game.
Belhaven would only surrender three points the rest of the way, ending the game on a 16-3 run to make the victory more lopsided.
Sarah Carr had her best game of the young season with 18 points total, nine of which came from behind the three-point stripe.
Ashley Wakefield was the only other Belhaven player to finish in double digits, as she put up 14 points on the afternoon. Wakefield also added two assists and made both of her free throw opportunities.
Sierra Cavitt had the most complete game of any Blazer. She finished with 11 rebounds and only a point away from her first double-double of the season.
Kelsey Montgomery was one of the lone bright spots for the Bears with a team high eight points.
The Blazers improve to 4-5 on the season and are now sitting with a .500 record in the SSAC at 2-2. Belhaven will return to the court on Friday December 14th in the Tougaloo College Classic against Talladega College. The tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
