Williams Scores 25 in 81-64 Win at Sewanee

SEWANEE, TN. - Belhaven women's basketball picked up a strong road win Saturday afternoon, knocking off Sewanee 81-64 to move to 6-1 on the season. The Blazers never trailed and set the tone early, leading by 22 points at halftime. Veronica Williams tied her career-high, which also came against Sewanee last season, with 25 points.

The Blazers shot just under 50 percent from the field, forced 17 turnovers, and got 27 points from the bench. Six different players scored at least five points, and the Blazers built a double-digit lead less than five minutes into the game before controlling the rest of the afternoon.

First Quarter

The Blazers came out sharp and grabbed control right away. Veronica Williams knocked down two quick threes to open the scoring, and Ny Jones added an elbow jumper to make it 8-2 before Sewanee even settled in.

After a short push from the Tigers, Belhaven answered with a steady run. Katelyn Coleman scored inside, then followed with a putback and two free throws. A steal and layup from Williams helped stretch the lead to 24-17, and two more free throws from Coleman closed the quarter with the Blazers up 27-17.

Second Quarter

Belhaven didn't let up. Williams stayed hot, burying another jumper and a transition three to quickly extend the lead to 36-22. Moments later she hit another shot on the break to push the margin to 39-22, completing an 8-0 stretch where the Blazers took full control.

Hudson connected from deep, Jones finished in transition, and Coleman continued to stack points at the line. By halftime the Blazers had doubled up Sewanee 54-32.

Third Quarter

Sewanee opened the half with free throws, but Belhaven answered every push. Jones hit a jumper to steady things, and a few minutes later Williams converted a layup off a steal. Coleman scored on the break to make it 64-38, the Blazers' biggest lead of the day.

Even as the pace slowed, Belhaven kept the Tigers at arm's length. Coleman added more free throws, Hailey and Jones each chipped in baskets, and the Blazers went to the fourth up 70-44.

Fourth Quarter

Sewanee made most of its fourth-quarter points at the free-throw line, but the Blazers never let the game drift out of their control. Hailey knocked down a smooth mid-range jumper, Coleman added another basket inside, and Jones followed with one of her own to keep the gap comfortable.

The Tigers chipped away late, but the outcome was never in doubt. Belhaven wrapped up the trip with a convincing 81-64 win.

The Blazers improve to 6-1 on the season and have a few days off before traveling to Columbus on Thursday for a rematch with MUW, who they beat in the first game of the season. Tip-off is set for 5:00 PM.
