Blazers Women's Basketball Starts Season 5-0 With 79-69 Win

JACKSON - Belhaven Women's Basketball won their second home game of the season with a 79-69 win over LeTourneau on Saturday afternoon at Rugg Arena. The win gives the Blazers their first 5-0 start since the 2019-20 season.

First Quarter
Belhaven set the tone defensively early, forcing turnovers and pushing the ball in transition. The Blazers opened with a 9-2 run highlighted by Veronica Williams' fast-break three and a score off an offensive rebound from Amanda Walker. After LeTourneau briefly cut the margin to three, the Blazers responded with a closing 8-2 burst that included free throws from Williams and a last-second jumper from Ny Jones. Belhaven led 17-9 after one.

Second Quarter
Belhaven stretched the lead as the bench took over. Walker scored in transition to start the frame, and Katelyn Coleman added a series of fast-break finishes. A three from Kiersten Hudson pushed the lead back to nine. LeTourneau countered with a small run, but Belhaven answered with a 9-2 surge powered by Williams, Hailey and Ramya King that restored a double-digit cushion. Williams nailed a late fast-break three, and Jones scored just before the horn again to make it 41-30 at halftime.

Third Quarter
The game tightened as LeTourneau used a 9-2 run early in the quarter to trim the lead to five. Belhaven regrouped with interior scoring from Coleman, Kamren Edwards and Jasi Jenkins. A key response came when Coleman scored back-to-back baskets, then Jenkins added a tip-in to cap a 6-0 stretch that rebuilt the margin to nine. A three from Tra'Shaylah Wilson late in the period helped Belhaven stay in front 58-52 heading to the fourth.

Fourth Quarter
After LeTourneau cut the lead to two, Coleman and Jones answered with fast-break baskets to push it back to four. Savannah Hailey took over on the glass and in transition, scoring six straight Belhaven points, including a key tip-in with 2:17 left to push the margin to eight. The Blazers then sealed the game at the line with free throws from Hailey and Williams. A late layup from Coleman pushed the lead to double figures, and Williams closed it out with two more at the stripe.

The Blazers have a week off to enjoy Thanksgiving before hosting Millsaps on Tuesday, December 2nd. Tip-off is set for 5:00 PM.
