Blazers Can’t Solve 3rd Ranked Freed-Hardeman

Box Score
HENDERSON, Tenn. – A tough early season road test against the No. 3 team in the Nation, Freed-Hardeman proved to be too much for the Blazers on Saturday afternoon. The Lions looked the part in front of their home crowd, beating Belhaven 85-48.

Belhaven Head Coach Rusty Cram knew before leaving for Tennessee on Friday, that this could very well be one of the best teams his Blazer squad sees all year.

After a slow start to the game, the Lions took control with runs of 16 and 17 points on their way to a 32 points lead over Belhaven at halftime.

The Blazers had no answers for guards Natalie Shumpert or Brittany Montogmery, who each scored 19 points in the game to lead both teams. They hit seven three-pointers between them, four in the first half that helped put Belhaven in an early hole.

The halftime deficit of that magnitude was virtually insurmountable, but it gave the Blazers a chance to work through some of the kinks on both sides of the ball. As difficult as it is to lose a game like that, Belhaven will be better prepared when they begin SSAC play in two weekends.

With each team cycling through a different set of players in the second half, Belhaven was able to play a much better half of basketball. The Blazers found a way to limit the damage that the Lions could do on offense in the second half, but they weren't able to find any offensive firepower of their own.

Belhaven continues to go through growing pains on the offensive side of the ball after graduating three of their top four scorers from a season ago.

Newcomer Kenya Wright led Belhaven with 11 points on the day from the point. Anonekia Williams was the only other Blazer player to post double digit scoring with ten points off of the bench.

Wright, one of the smallest players on the floor, also led Belhaven with four offensive rebounds and five overall.

Belhaven (1-1) will look to rebound with their home opener against cross-town rival Tougaloo College on Friday night at 6 p.m. in Rugg Arena.
