Belhaven Soccer Set for SSAC Tournaments

JACKSON, Miss. – For the first time in four years, both of the Belhaven soccer teams are preparing for conference postseason play. While there is a buzz of excitement upon the Belhaven campus due to the success the teams have seen this fall, the two teams will need to tune out all distractions if they want their seasons to continue.

The Belhaven women have a matchup with the number one team in the country, Lee University, a team which has won the last four NAIA National titles. Belhaven hasn't backed down from challenges all season long and their schedule has been packed full of them.

The Blazers have played six Top 25 teams in the country and gave many of those teams a run for their money. One of the teams that did turn in a dominating performance was Lee, who defeated Belhaven in Jackson with six first half goals on their way to a 6-0 win.

The Flames looked every part of their national ranking then and things shouldn't be much different now. If Belhaven is going to spoil the Flames thoughts about an SSAC Championship, they will need major contributions from inexperienced players.

Belhaven's three top scorers are all underclassman and their top scorer is coincidentally also one of their best defenders, Ashley Harber. Harber totaled seven goals in her rookie season for the Blazers, five of which have come off of set pieces with fellow freshman Laura Quintero.

Rebecca Ontero has had a quieter sophomore season after taking the conference by storm with 15 goals a year ago. With Lee possibly looking ahead to their semifinal matchup, it would be a good opportunity for Ontero to put forth her best game of the season.

The Blazers finished the year on a four game losing streak after a promising 4-3 start in conference play, while Lee hasn't lost a game since opening weekend versus then No. 5 Embry-Riddle (FL).

On the men's side, Belhaven enters a matchup with No. 17 Southern Poly after completing a topsy-turvy final two weeks of the season. Belhaven defeated No. 5 Auburn-Montgomery 2-0 in Alabama last week, but suffered a disappointing loss to William Carey (RV) in the regular season finale.

The loss dropped Belhaven from second to fourth in the conference seeding.

However, the Blazers have played some of the best soccer seen around the country this year. They've found ways to rise up to the occasion against some of the best teams around the NAIA.

The Blazers played Southern Poly in front of a home crowd back on September 28th and used an early goal to beat the Hornets 1-0. At the time both teams were ranked in the Top 10 in the country.

Belhaven will need to make sure that their top offensive threats are healthy for the game on Saturday. Both Loic Miliani and Will Monsour have missed ample time this season due to injury, but the two have been quite a connection when they are both on the field. The Blazers are undefeated when both players are in the lineup.

Monsour leads the team in goals with 17 and Miliani is the top assist-man with nine.

The Belhaven women are traveling to Cleveland, Tennessee and will kick off with the Flames at 4 p.m. Central Time on Saturday. The men will be at home for a 6:30 start following the football game.
