Blazers Breakthrough for 1-0 Win at Spring Hill

Box Score
MOBILE, Ala. – The Belhaven women's soccer team rebounded from a tough loss on Tuesday to defeat Spring Hill College 1-0 on the road in Southern States Athletic Conference action on Saturday. Blazers' forward Saje Pernie netted her second goal in as many games to account for the lone score on the day for either team.

After dropping three straight conference games at home, the Blazers were looking forward to getting back on the road where they have had success this season.

Saturday afternoon was no different, as Belhaven (5-8, 3-3 SSAC) had their most complete effort of the last few weeks. The Blazers looked sharp on both offense and defense.

On offense, Belhaven found themselves with plenty of scoring opportunities early in the match. In the 16th minute, Pernie planted herself a few yards from the goal and was able to knock a header into the back of the net. Freshman midfielder Loredana Bono centered a ball from the right side of the field that connected with Pernie's forehead for the goal.

The Blazers put seven balls on net over the course of the game to keep the pressure on the Badgers defense.

Defensively, the Blazers were well organized in the back and Nicole Walsh quarterbacked the unit to an impressive showing. Walsh finished with a hard earned seven saves on the afternoon to preserve the shutout.

Spring Hill (4-8, 1-5 SSAC) outshot the Blazers in the second half after the two teams finished with seven shots a piece in the first. Despite Spring Hill's efforts, Belhaven's defenders limited the Badgers to tough shots outside the 18 yard mark.

The win improves the Blazers to 3-3 in the SSAC, with a road trip to Southern Wesleyan and Truett-McConnell on the docket next week. If the Blazers can escape with two wins next weekend then they'll be right in the thick of things in the SSAC standings. Friday's match with Southern Wesleyan gets underway at 4:00 PM.
