Blazers Suffer First Loss at Spring Hill

Box Score
MOBILE, Ala.-The Belhaven men's soccer team suffered its first setback of the 2012 season on Saturday afternoon, falling 2-1 in a Southern States Athletic Conference match at Spring Hill College. The Blazers, ranked 4th in the latest NAIA Top 25 Coaches' Poll, are now 12-1 overall and 5-1 in conference play after the loss.

Spring Hill (8-5, 3-3 SSAC) was aggressive early and it didn't take them long to get on the board. Tyler Hartlage beat Belhaven goalie Carl Blundell with a shot from six yards out in the fourth minute of the match. Arturo Garcia assisted on the play that gave the Badgers a 1-0 lead.

Belhaven came right back in the seventh minute when junior forward Will Monsour found himself in a one-on-one matchup with goalkeeper Jacob Files. Monsour got to within eight yards of the net and slipped the ball past Files to even the match at 1-1. Senior midfielder Guilherme Sousa threaded a perfect pass through the defenders to set the table for Monsour.

The Badgers regained the edge later in the half on a goal by Andrew McInnis off an assist from Esteban Angel. Angel guided the ball on an entry pass to McInnis who was eight yards from the goal when he fired the game winning shot in the 37th minute.

Spring Hill held off the Blazers the rest of the way for the win although Belhaven had some chances especially in the second half. The Blazers outshot the Badgers 22-14, including a 13-5 edge in the final period. In the last five minutes match, Files turned away one shot and Nasser Chariff had one ball sail high of the goal as the final horn sounded.

"Despite the loss, I was proud of the guys tonight," said Belhaven Head Coach Brian McMahon. "We battled hard and did everything but score when we needed too. Credit to Spring Hill for playing a compact defense that was hard to break."

Monsour led the Belhaven offense with seven shots and his first half goal was his team leading 17th of the season. Blundell played all 90 minutes in net allowing two goals with two saves. The loss dropped his season record to 11-1.

Garcia had a team high four shots for Spring Hill followed by McInnis with three looks at the net. Files played all 90 minutes in front of the goal allowing one score with five saves.

Belhaven will take the field again on Friday when the team heads to Central, SC to battle Southern Wesleyan University. The Blazers will then play at Truett-McConnell to wrap up the road trip on Saturday. Friday's kickoff is slated for 7:00 PM.
