Blazers Return Home to Battle Kentucky Christian

JACKSON, Miss.- Momentum seems to be heading in the right direction for the Belhaven football team as it returns home on Saturday afternoon to battle Kentucky Christian University at H.T. Newell Field. The Blazers are winners of two straight games and have combined to score 122 in those contests. The Knights are looking to get back on track this weekend having lost their last two games. Kentucky Christian opened the 2012 season with an upset win over Lindsey Wilson (KY) and Bluefield College (VA) in weeks one and two before falling to NCAA Division II North Alabama and third ranked Georgetown College (KY).

Belhaven (2-3) vs. UVA-Wise (2-2), Saturday October 6th 1:30 PM, in Jackson, Miss, H.T. Newell Field. Last Meeting: Belhaven won 41-14 on September 19th, 2009 at H.T. Newell Field in Jackson, Miss.

Series vs. Kentucky Christian: (Belhaven leads 1-0): This will be just the second meeting between the two schools.

Gaining Ground: One of the goals that Head Coach Joe Thrasher had when he took over the program was to develop an offense that could run the football effectively. The Blazers have certainly been able to do that this season through the first five games of the schedule. Following Saturday's win, Belhaven in averaging 219.4 yards per game on the ground and has amassed 15 rushing touchdowns.

Belhaven had 282 yards rushing and 244 yards passing leading to 526 yards of total offense last week at UVA-Wise. The 282 rushing yards was second most for a single game in school history. The record is 323 yards set last year against Faulkner University. All seven of Belhaven's touchdowns were on the ground.

Road Losing Streak Broken: Saturday's win at UVA-Wise snapped a 12 game losing streak on the road that dated back to 2010. Prior to last weekend, the Blazers last successful road trip was August 28, 2010 when they defeated Texas College 58-3.

In the Spotlight: Junior running back Kadero Edley ran for 169 yards and one touchdown in last week's win over the Cavaliers. Edley touched the ball 15 times and averaged 11.3 yards per carry. Edley has been one of many key components of Belhaven's resurgence in the run game. Edley leads the Blazers in total rushing yards (432) and rushing yards per game (86.4). On the national level, Edley is 25th in the NAIA in total yards.

Quick Stats: Belhaven's offense ranks in the top 20 in the NAIA in multiple categories heading into week six of the season. The Blazers are 10th in first downs per game (23), 13th in points per game (35) 15th in total rushing yards (1097), 16th in rushing yards per game (219.4), and 19th in total offensive yards per game (421.8).

Tale of the Tape: Belhaven holds the offensive edge on paper in total yards, rushing yards and passing yards. The Blazers are averaging 395.8 yards per game compared to the Cavaliers, who enter the weekend at 245.2 yards per contest. UVA-Wise picks up 95 yards per game on the grown and 150.2 yards per game through the air. Belhaven is averaging 203.8 yards rushing and 192 yards passing per contest.
