JACKSON, Miss.-The Belhaven men's soccer team kept the momentum going Thursday night powering to a 3-0 Southern States Athletic Conference win over Faulkner University at H.T. Newell Field. The Blazers, ranked fourth in the latest NAIA Top 25 Coaches' Poll, had control of the match from the early stages and wore down the Eagles throughout the course of the night.
Belhaven's outstanding start to the season can be attributed to the talent up and down the roster. Depth proved to be a strength and arguably the difference in the match Thursday night with two of the goals being scored by non-starters. The Blazers sent 24 different players on the field and didn't miss a beat for the entire 90 minutes.
Belhaven (12-0, 5-0 SSAC) got on the board in the 21st minute on a header by senior defender
Tom Cosgrave, his second score of the season. Sophomore defender
David Cole placed a perfect corner kick into the box in front of the net giving Cosgrave an open look at the net. Cole was credited with his second assist of 2012.
The Blazers extended the lead to 2-0 in the 37th minutes on an almost identical play. This time the duo of freshman midfielder
Marco Pavlin and sophomore midfielder
Victor France teamed up for the goal. France dealt the corner kick in for Pavlin who headed the ball past goalkeeper Pritchard Ndaira into the right corner of net for his first goal of the season.
Late in the second half, junior midfielder
Felipe Ferreira capped the match with his third goal of the 2012 campaign. Junior midfielder
David Major unleashed a shot towards the right corner off the goal, but Ndaira made a diving save to keep it from crossing the goal line. Fortunately for Belhaven, the ball deflected back towards the middle of the field where Ferreira was waiting for the shot. Ndaira's save a few seconds earlier took him out of the play leaving a wide open shot for Ferreira who made it count for the final tally of 3-0.
“Tonight was a great win for us and we had outstanding play from a number of different players,” said Belhaven Head Coach Brian McMahon. “Our depth was the key to tonight's win with two of the three goals being scored by our bench players. Our depth has been a big advantage for us in matches this season and a major reason for the success that we've had so far.”
The Blazers dominated on the offensive side of the field outshooting Faulkner (3-6-1, 1-3-1 SSAC) 21-10 on the night. Pavlin ended the night with a team high four shots, with two of them being on goal. A trio of goalkeepers combined on the shutout Thursday. Junior
