NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Belhaven women's volleyball team lost for the second time in as many days, as the Loyola Wolfpack defeated the Blazers in straight sets on Tuesday evening. Loyola rolled out to a quick 2-0 lead before rallying to finish the sweep and tie the season series with the Blazers.
After a frustrating loss to Xavier University on Monday night, the Blazers were looking to turn around their fortunes in the SSAC finale. Belhaven was hopeful that they could make history by beating the Wolfpack for the second time on the year.
Loyola always plays Belhaven tough, including a five set match at Rugg Arena in late September. However, the Wolfpack have been up and down at times this season and the Blazers were hoping to catch the Wolfpack on one of their down nights. Unfortunately, they faced anything but that.
Loyola took the first set 25-11 before the Blazers even knew what hit them. Belhaven hadn't lost a set by more than eight points all season and was taken aback by the fast start by the Wolfpack.
Things didn't improve in the second set for Belhaven as Loyola jumped on a reeling team again for a 25-15 victory that would push the Blazers to the brink. They would need to win three straight sets to take the overall victory, something they had only done once in the 2012 season.
The Blazers raced out to a 20-16 lead in the third set and looked poised at getting their first set win on the night, before the wheels came off. Loyola took nine of the final eleven points in the set to take the clincher 25-22 and beat Belhaven three games to none.
Taylor Williams (9 kills) and
Brittany Ammons (7 kills) led the Blazers attack.
Erin Bradley totaled 22 assists on a night where the Belhaven attacks weren't connecting consistently.
Katherine Owen had 16 digs to pace the Belhaven defense.
Belhaven will have almost two weeks to regroup from a disappointing finish to the regular season before the SSAC tournament gets underway on November 9th. Belhaven sat third in the standings entering the Loyola match, but due to the loss, they have fallen into a three way tie for third. Final seeding for the SSAC tournament will be determined once all the teams conclude their regular seasons.
