JACKSON, Miss-The Belhaven men's soccer team fell to 18th ranked University of Mobile Saturday night in a Southern States Athletic Conference contest at H.T. Newell Field. The Blazers, ranked 6th in the latest NAIA Top 25 Coaches' Poll, jumped out to an early 1-0 lead only to see the Rams notch three unanswered goals in the second half to take home a 3-1 win.
The match was a stalemate through the first 32 minutes of action until Belhaven (13-2-1, 6-2-1 SSAC) broke the ice in the 33rd minute. Junior forward
Eduardo Cruz delivered the first goal of the night when he placed the ball past a diving Xavier Audergon who got the start in goal for Mobile. The scoring sequence started following a corner kick that was created by the Blazers pressure on the offensive end of the field.
Unfortunately, not much else would go Belhaven's way the rest of the night. The Blazers held off the Rams until the 55th minute when Gaetan Massiah knotted the match at 1-1 on what would be the first of three goals in the game. Massiah found himself with a clear shot against goalkeeper
Carl Blundell and bent the ball past his outstretched hands to find the back of the net.
Massiah struck again with the game winner for Mobile (11-3-1, 7-2 SSAC) in the 62nd minute off a cross pass in front of the box from Gunnar Steindorsson who was credited with the assist.
Massiah added an insurance goal and in the process recorded a hat trick in the 70th minute extending the Rams lead to 3-1. Steindorsson contributed his second assist in the contest by feeding another perfect pass to Massiah that made its way through the Belhaven defense. At that point, Mobile settled in defensively and made things very difficult on the Blazers offense, which was limited to five shots in the second half and just seven shots in the game.
“Give credit to Mobile for making the most of their chances and unfortunately we couldn't finish ours,” said Belhaven Head Coach Brian McMahon. “I felt the game was a tale of two halves. We had plenty of chances to put the game away in the first half. Mobile came out playing long direct play in the second half and we just didn't react well to it.”
Cruz and Nasser Chariff led the Blazers in shot attempts with two apiece. Cruz's two shots were both on goal with one finding the back of the net. Blundell suffered the loss in net, logging all 90 minutes with seven saves and three goals allowed.
Massiah unloaded six shots to pace the Rams while Steindorsson fired three shots at the goal. Audergon earned the win and allowed only one goal while making three saves during his 90 minutes of work in net.
Belhaven will look to regroup `on Wednesday when they travel to Auburn University-Montgomery for another SSAC contest. The kickoff is slated for 3:30 PM.
