CENTRAL, S.C.-The Belhaven men's soccer team battled 15th ranked Southern Wesleyan University (SC) to 1-1 tie in Southern States Athletic Conference action on Friday night. The Blazers, ranked 5th in the latest NAIA Top 25 Coaches' Poll, ran into a tough Warriors defense en route to their first tie of the 2012 campaign.
Belhaven (12-1-1, 5-1-1 SSAC) fell behind in the first half when Douglas Andrade blasted in a goal during the 19th minute. Alejandro Sanches setup the shot and was credited with the assist. That proved to be the only scoring in the first that saw a combined 12 shots between the two teams. The attempts were split evenly at six apiece.
The Blazers picked up the equalizer in period number two thanks to the foot of junior forward
Eduardo Cruz. Cruz's solo effort against Southern Wesleyan goalie John Prochak ended up being the only other score of the night, although the Warriors applied constant pressure to the Belhaven defense.
Southern Wesleyan (9-2-1, 4-2-1 SSAC) fired 12 shots in the second half and seven during the two overtime frames. Belhaven goalkeeper
Carl Blundell made three saves, including two in the second half and one in OT to preserve the tie and earn the Blazers a point in the SSAC standings.
Following Friday's contest, Belhaven maintains first place with a one point advantage in the standings over 10th ranked Southern Polytechnic State, 6th Auburn-Montgomery, and 19th ranked University of Mobile. The 15th ranked Warriors are three points off the pace in arguably the toughest conference in the NAIA. The top five teams in the league are all ranked in the top 20 nationally with sixth place William Carey University receiving votes in the latest poll.

Will Monsour had three shots apiece for Belhaven. Sanches peppered six shots and assisted on the Warriors only goal. Prochak tallied four saves for Southern Wesleyan and Blundell countered with three for Belhaven.
The Blazers will go back to work on Saturday as the team travels to Truett-McConnell for another key SSAC contest. The kickoff is slated for 3:30 PM.
